Everton have clearly stepped up their game quite considerably this summer. Joining the likes of Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Michael Keane down at Goodison Park is none other than Wayne Rooney himself – a former Toffees favourite who loved to get the Everton fans talking.
But will the former Old Trafford legend really fare well among his former employers after leaving them by the wayside all those years ago, or does Wayne Rooney still have a great deal to offer among the English top-flight with Ronald Koeman’s side next season ?
It’s bound to prove a rather captivating affair one way or another…

Are there any doubters still about Rooney? Lad looks trim, hungry and it has done wonders for Everton media profile. Great signing 👍🏻

Once it had become remarkably clear that Rooney’s time with Manchester United was soon drawing to a rather unceremonious end, many expected the former Red Devils and England captain to up sticks for the MLS, or perhaps even China or the Middle East.
Rooney would have been bound to receive all the riches any ageing footballer could ever ask for – but despite the chance to place himself among some of the most well-paid athletes on the planet this summer, if he wasn’t already one of them – the former Old Trafford representative opted to move back to his boyhood club in the shape of Everton.
From the perspective of the Goodison Park faithful, this latest deal seems to make a great deal of sense. Although the Everton bosses will surely be paying Rooney enough cash as it is to see him represent their increasingly ambitious side, this free-transfer will likely prove more than worthwhile in the long-run. On shirt-sales alone, the Toffees have certainly done well to finalise this particular deal.
Via his natural technical ability and keen eye for goal, Everton still have a reasonably well-versed player on their hands. His unrelenting pace may have indeed left him many moons ago, but the former Three Lions favourite possesses enough hard-earned experience to get Ronald Koeman’s squad thinking like champions and subsequently playing like a serious title-challenging side too.

As a player, the 31-year-old Englishman is clearly past his best. In-fact, fans of the English game have arguably failed to witness Rooney playing at the very best of his abilities for quite some time now. He has faltered somewhat whilst representing Manchester United in recent years, despite scoring enough goals to keep him relevant and well within the back-page headlines.
As Everton have not been forced to break the bank in order to bring Rooney back to their club however, this move can only be viewed in a positive light for now. Whilst this latest signing will in no way make up for the loss of Romelu Lukaku – who incidentally, finds himself moving off to Old Trafford in the other direction – as high profile free transfers go, the signing of Wayne Rooney is one that most Toffees fans will remain resoundingly pleased about.
Everton might not go on to land the league title in 2017/18 with Wayne Rooney on board. Yet can we expect Ronald Koeman’s side to take one step closer to that all-important sense of unrivalled Premier League glory in the not too distant future?
Absolutely yes, and Wayne Rooney could well prove a big part of that…
