The Foxes were disappointing on Boxing Day as they failed to hit the target against Everton. They can welcome back a few first team players and Claudio Ranieri may choose to restore Rihad Mahrez to the starting XI after resting him on Monday. Leicester’s blank on Monday was unusual as they nearly always find the net at the KP. They drew 2-2 with Middlesbrough before beating Manchester City 4-2 and have previously been defeated 2-1 by West Brom. Their games here have been punctuated by defensive errors and terrific finishing and this one should be entertaining. West Ham hit four on their travels in South Wales on Monday, but weren’t able to keep a clean sheet. Andre Ayew and Andy Carroll are both back from injury which gives Slaven Bilic plenty of options in the final third. The Hammers aren’t known for keeping clean sheets on their travels this season and Leicester are likely to get back to scoring ways here.
These two sides met at the start of the month with Wednesday emerging 2-1 winners. The match will be remembered for Jermaine Beckford and Eoin Doyle scrapping amongst themselves before being given their marching orders. Wednesday have improved massively since then and record four wins from their last five matches. The Owls have netted in all but two away games this season with only Derby and Norwich keeping them off the scoresheet. Preston’s usual stingy backline has been a little generous this month allowing 10 goals past in the last 5 Championship matches. They conceded twice to Blackburn here before shipping four to an impressive Leeds outfit on Monday. Both teams have found the net in each of their last six games and that looks set to continue. Sheffield Wednesday may have kept a clean sheet against Newcastle, but they were lucky to keep the Toon Army out with the hosts hitting the woodwork and wasting several good chances.
Peterborough should win this one against struggling Coventry, but the visitors do tend to get on the scoresheet. The Sky Blues are just one point above bottom club Oldham and were beaten 4-1 by Bristol Rovers on Monday. They’ve notched in four of their last five matches on the road and will fancy their chances of netting against a side who have only kept 1 clean sheet in 4 home matches. Peterborough have goals in them and the likes of Tom Nicholls, Paul Taylor and Lee Angol can score at this level and should find the Coventry backline very accommodating. Mark Venus’ side have scored exactly one goal in five of their last six games in League One.
Newport gave Portsmouth a scare on Boxing Day as the bottom side went two goals up. The conditions at Rodney Parade were difficult and they won’t be much better for the visit of Exeter. The Grecians have terrific away form, but could only draw at Yeovil on Monday. They’d netted 13 times in their previous five away games, so it was a surprise to see them draw a blank at Huish Park. The hosts have now scored in back to back games and are gradually gaining confidence in the final third after a torrid spell under Graham Westley. They’ve scored 6 goals in 5 home games and should be able to build upon their good first half performance against Pompey. The last two meetings between these sides have both finished 1-1.
