Derby to beat Reading
It was looking like Derby might have bottled it for a while when they dropped a number of alarming points at a crucial stage of the season. Whilst draws against Huddersfield and Millwall have been far from ideal, it has just about kept them in the play-off hunt on the final day of the season and it will give a chance for Steve McClaren to shake up his squad and get them prepared for a 3 game mini-season.
There’s no doubt about their goalscoring credentials, they have netted 7 in the last 2 games, amazingly only seeing the paltry return of 2 points for their troubles. But they seem to have forgotten how to defend. The once ever-reliable Richard Keogh and Jake Buxton have all of a sudden looked shaky and errors have crept into the backline.
However, Reading are the perfect opponents at this time of the season. They are safe in midtable, but are hopelessly out of form and Rotherham were delighted to pick up 3 points from them on Tuesday night ensuring their safety. Steve Clarke has a lot of work to do over the summer and they will be happy to see the season out.
This should be the perfect opportunity for Derby to secure their place in the play-offs.
Middlesbrough to beat Brighton
Middlesbrough may have missed out on automatic promotion (bar a 20 goal swing) but they will want to go into the play-offs with plenty of confidence and secure that 3rd place berth. Aitor Karanka will want to put Saturday’s 4-3 exhilarating defeat behind them as soon as possible and they will find little difficulty keeping a blunt Brighton attack at bay. The Seagulls have been poor of late and have scored just a couple of goals since the middle of March. Chris Hughton needs to find a goalscorer with Sam Baldock and Chris O’Grady not scoring anywhere near enough goals this campaign.
Boro have a sell-out crowd at the Riverside and the vocal support may help to push them over the line and end of a win.
Brentford to beat Wigan
Wigan are down and many may think with the pressure off they could pull off a surprise victory. But this could be Mark Warburton’s last game in charge of Brentford and his players shouldn’t let him leave without a final victory. They could still achieve a play-off spot, but with Derby facing Reading, it looks unlikely, but they will push all the way and keep up their side of the bargain.
Brentford score goals and it could be the last game at the club for on-loan Spurs whizzkid Alex Pritchard who goes back to his parent club once the season is over.
Wigan have been poor all season, they have showed signs of life under Gary Caldwell but they probably won’t have enough for a very efficient Brentford side.
