Doncaster vs Portsmouth predictions and football betting tips for the League Two match on Thursday 5th December with the best odds, reasons for our tips and team news.
There’s a fascinating battle at the top of League Two on Thursday as the Sky cameras visit the Keepmoat to watch Doncaster host Portsmouth. We’ve got three betting tips for the match.
Doncaster went top of League Two with a late victory over Stevenage on Monday afternoon. In contrast to the 3-4 scoreline when the sides previously met, this game was decided by fine margins and a Fraser Franks own goal proved the difference. Darren Ferguson was delighted to see his side move to the summit and has moved quickly to secure the services of loanees Connor Grant and Riccardo Calder this week who have been tied down until the end of the campaign.
The South Yorkshire outfit remain unbeaten at home this season and could secure a 5th consecutive victory at the Keepmoat if they can collect three points against Portsmouth.
Since losing 2-0 to Plymouth in disappointing fashion at the start of December, Ferguson’s side have tightened up at the back and they’ve conceded just a single goal in their last four matches. That came against near neighbours Mansfield.
Liam Mandeville is apparently subject of interest from a number of Championship clubs after reaching double figures for the season. He has netted 4 times in this last 4 home matches. Andy Williams has also returned from an injury lay off and firepower is certainly not in short supply in South Yorkshire.
Portsmouth moved to 4th in the table with a narrow victory over Luton. Paul Cook’s side kept the impressive Hatters at bay and struck through a Christian Burgess header in the first half.
Key playmaker Gary Roberts is back from a period of rest and came off the bench on Monday. He could make his comeback on Thursday as Portsmouth look to find a way through the Doncaster backline.
Defender Gareth Evans insisted his side aren’t obsessing over the gap between themselves and the top three and will just continue to plug away. Pompey have lost just one in ten and are difficult opposition for any side currently.
They’ve won three of their last four away games and will be confident of heading back south with something to show for it.
Doncaster have won 6 of 8 home matches and drawn the other two. Those stalemates came against 3rd place Carlisle and in-form Wycombe. Portsmouth have drawn three of seven away matches including a 2-2 draw with 2nd place Plymouth. Both sides are extremely difficult to beat and it’s likely to end all square so the draw is our first football betting tip this week. The best odds are 23/10 with Bet Bright.
These two have been hard to break down recently and Donny have conceded just a single goal in four matches. Portsmouth come here off the back of two clean sheets. My second prediction for Doncaster vs Portsmouth is under 2.5 goals at 4/5 with Sky Bet.
Liam Mandeville has taken over penalty taking duty for Doncaster and has now scored 10 times this season. He could be the man to break the deadlock here and complete this week’s football tips with a 9/4 bet at Betfred.
Connor Grant should continue in the side after securing his loan deal for the remainder of the season and is likely to be joined by Jordan Houghton, who also signed a longer deal this week. Andy Williams has been restricted to appearances from the bench and will be pushing for a start.
Gary Roberts should come back into the side after being rested over the Christmas period. Kyle Bennett could make way for the former Chesterfield man. Milan Lalkovic hasn’t featured much for Pompey with Paul Cook praising his contribution recently and he could get some game time here.
Doncaster won 2-1 in October at Fratton Park with John Marquis and Andy Williams scoring the goals for the visitors.
Their last meeting at the Keepmoat came in League One with the sides drawing 1-1 in 2013.
There isn’t much between these sides in the betting with Doncaster just shading it at around 13/8. Portsmouth start at around 7/4 with most firms. The draw is priced at 12/5.
John Marquis and Andy Williams start as the two favourites in the goalscoring market, but the latter is likely to start on the bench.
