There is no right or wrong way to pick the selections on a football accumulator bet but we have got some pointers to consider when picking an accumulator that will hopefully help you win big on a football accumulator this season.
How do you win a football accumulator?
We have put together a step by step plan which we think will help you pick the correct teams in your accumulator, whether it be a weekend bet or a midweek accumulator – this 5-step guide could help you pick the right teams on the right day.
1. Avoid the ‘bankers’ when they’re away from home
The Premier League is often a graveyard for away teams who are favourites, especially at the likes of Burnley, Everton, Stoke and Crystal Palace. The tough away matches are always a risk when putting in an accumulator bet. For example, Man City were odds on at 4/5 to beat Everton at Goodison Park and lost 4-0. Man United were 6/10 to win at Stoke and the match ended a draw. Arsenal were 9/10 away to Everton and lost, Liverpool were 18/25 at Bournemouth and lost and Tottenham were 2/5 to win at West Ham and got beat. All of these upsets would have ruined your footy accumulator.
2. Check the home and away form separately
When you are picking an accumulator, you are likely to have a quick look at a teams form and make your selection based on that. However, one way you can sometimes get an edge over the bookies is my reading into the form based on where the team are playing this upcoming match. If they have won their last five at home and lost five away their form wouldn’t look too bad, but if their upcoming match is at home you can be confident you are betting on a team in great form at home. If they haven’t won in five at home but have won three of five away, it’s a team to avoid because they’re on a terrible away run.
3. Don’t go mad with the number of selections
Here at Thatsagoal, our football accumulator tips are usually five selections. We try to stick to the ‘how do you win an accumulator’ rules and avoid the supposed bankers and steer clear of teams on a poor home/away run. We also try to pick teams around the evens mark in the betting odds. This gives a solid return if the football accumulator is a winning bet. Five Evens selections makes a 31/1 accumulator tip, winning £320 from a £10 bet. It’s always tempting to add more selections to an acca but try and avoid it is you want the accumulator to win.
A 5-fold of 5 Evens selections wins £320 from a £10 bet.
4. Try to stick to the same kick-off times
This is another personal choice and is especially true of a weekend. How many times have you done an accumulator and the 12.30pm match has let you down meaning you don’t get any enjoyment out of Jeff and the boys at 3pm (or you have to spend more money on another acca!)? On a Saturday accumulator tip we will always stick to the 3pm kick-offs so we can keep track of all the selections at the same time. There is then the option to cash-out early if all five teams are winning at any one point, which leads us to the final point in our guide of how do you win a football accumulator.
5. Always use the bookies with the best odds and offer where possible
It is difficult to find a bookies with the perfect combination for betting on footy accumulators but the bookies you chose certainly forms a key part of our 'how do you win a football accumulator' guide. In an ideal world you’d have a bookies that offers cash-out, has the best odds for your acca and has a acca insurance refund offer. This is an unlikely combination because bookmakers will generally drop the odds of the accumulator selections if there is a money back refund. In our free bets section you will see the best accumulator offers to use and they’re also underneath our football accumulator tips page. William Hill are one bookmaker that offers cash-out on accumulator bets and their free bet bonus gives you a £20 free bet yo use on accas.
