The Premier League seems to be awash with a set of brilliant new Belgian superstars. Just how the rebirth of Belgian football may have come about is a mystery to many, but their array of quality players is there for all to see.
For a start they have Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen at centre half of Man City and Arsenal respectively. Kompany is arguably the best centre back in the world and Vermaelen’s reputation as a top stopper is growing by the day. He’s become one of the first names on the Arsenal team sheet and looks set to be the first player for a while to add to Arsenal’s rich lineage of top defenders.
In Midfield there’s Dembele, Hazard and Fellaini, all of which would slot comfortably into an England team. Dembele was always on the radar of the top clubs and could be the signing of the summer. Hazard and Fellaini are probably the Premier League’s two top players so far with Fellaini’s near single handed toppling of Man United and Hazard’s early form being nothing short of a revelation.
Up front West Brom’s Lukaku is being labelled as the new Drogba, and Aston Villa have just invested around £7million in Christian Benteke. Alongside Fellaini at Everton is Kevin Mirallas, who scored 2 goals in his first start in the League Cup for the Toffees.
All of the aforementioned players have many of the characteristics found in the Premier League: pace, height and power. If you were to pick a Premier League 11 today many of these names would feature, making Belgium a great prospect for the Brazil World Cup in 2014 with potential odds of around 25/1.
