International football is back, and on Thursday, we see Portugal travel to face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin, in what is the fifth match in the qualifying group.
Ireland have won one, drawn one and lost two of their four games so far in the group. They are in third place, and need a result to have any chance of finishing second above Hungary.
Portugal are unbeaten in the group so far with three wins and one draw. They’re on 10 points from four, and a win here will see them win Group F.

I’m backing Portugal to come out on top in this one at the Aviva Stadium. They have won three of their four Group F matches, drawing the other one and scoring 11 in the process. Ireland have scored just four goals, and I don’t think they’ve got the attacking power to do any damage to Portugal. I think 1/3 is very generous for Portugal to win this one.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the man we’re backing to score here. He has scored five in Portugal’s four group matches so far, with three of them coming away from home and two at home. Portugal will create a lot of chances here as they look to secure the top spot in Group F, and Ronaldo will, as always, be the focal point of their attack. He has scored nine in eight in the Saudi Professional League for Al Nassr.

Ronaldo has scored two in two of their four matches in the group so far, with one in another, drawing a blank on only one occasion. 5/2 is good odds for him to bag more than one in Dublin.

Bernardo Silva isn’t much of a goalscorer as such, but he does have real attacking quality. He’s yet to score in the league for Man City this season, registering only one shot. However, he has bagged for Portugal in this World Cup qualifying campaign, and plays a slightly more advanced role. With one goal in the four games so far, there’s a good chance he will have an opportunity or two here, and in turn has a good shout for one or more shots on target.
Rep of Ireland vs Portugal Card Bet Builder Tip – Dara O’Shea to be carded (29/10)
Dara O’Shea hasn’t been carded for Ipswich Town in the Championship so far this season, making three fouls in the league. However, he did pick up six bookings in the Premier League last season, playing against a higher quality attacker. Coming up against the likes of Ronaldo, Gonçalo Ramos and Bernardo Silva here, he will be in for a difficult 90 minutes, and I’m sure he will be forced into making a foul or two. I think there’s a good chance he will pick up his first booking of the campaign here.
