1:40 Newbury

The opener from Newbury is a handicap hurdle over the extended 2m4f trip.

I like GUARD DUTY  in this for the Emma Lavelle yard. A progressive novice hurdler last season with his best performance coming over this course and distance last March. He didn’t come off the bridle in beating the re-opposing Loverdose that day. Back here at Newbury with the red-hot Gavin Sheehan taking the ride, I’m expecting a bold bid.

2:00 Newcastle

The first race from Newcastle is the exciting renewal of the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle.

I think THE NEW LION is the one to be with here. The up-and-coming star that is only going to get better. He was an impressive winner of the Grade 1 Baring Bingham at the Festival last year, where he did well to pick up both Final Demand and The Yellow Clay in the straight. I imagine that race will work out strongly all year. He’s a strong traveller, so I don’t see this 2m trip being a problem at all. Constitution Hill has questions to answer and Anzadam hasn’t got the form of The New Lion at present.

2:15 Newbury

Next up at Newbury is the Gerry Feilden, a handicap hurdle over the extended 2m trip.

The one I’ve landed on is INDEEVAR BLEU. Despite being 7 years-old, he’s still unexposed as it appears he hasn’t been the easiest to get right. However, he’s shown he has a significant amount of ability when he has made it the track. He was last seen in April winning a handicap at Ffos Las where he travelled strongly and showed a decent turn of foot to win going away come the line. The stable have no problem getting them ready after a break and with Sean Bowen in the saddle, you always have a chance.

2:55 Newbury

The big handicap chase is the 2:55, the Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase over 3m2f.

The one for me is BLIZZARD OF OZ EW. A horse I believe, is getting better with experience, and I do not think we’ve got to the bottom of him yet by any stretch of the imagination. Unlucky not to win at Punchestown last April, he was last seen winning a decent listed contest over at Wexford. This 3m trip looks sure to bring out more improvement and he’s trained by the right man in Willie Mullins. I just think he’ll be well suited by this test.

3:15 Newcastle

The 3:15 from Newcastle is the Rehearsal Handicap Chase over 3m.

I’ll be giving KONFUSION another go here after he fell when well supported last week at Haydock. He was a good winner on reappearance and given the market support for him last week, you’d imagine connections still feel he’s handicapped to go close. Hes still unexposed and he can bounce back here on a track that will suit his prominent racing style.

3:35 Newbury

We finish with the 3:35 from Newbury. It is a 2m handicap chase.

I do like GENERAL MEDRANO NAP in this. He bolted up in the race last season and it looks as though connections have targeted it again here. They follow a similar route coming here for his second start of the season and his seasonal reappearance this time at Ascot was full of promise. That should put him spot on for this and he’s certainly well-handicapped to go and win this race again.
