Eddie Howe’s Newcastle travel to the south of France to face Olympique de Marseille at the Orange Vélodrome on Tuesday evening. The Toon Army come into this one full of confidence after a victory over Man City at the weekend.
Marseille, who are managed by former Brighton manager Roberto Di Zerbi, are having a great season in France. They’re second in Ligue 1, just two points behind PSG, with a far superior goal difference. In the Champions League, they have struggled, losing three of their four matches so far.
Newcastle haven’t had a great season domestically, as they lie 14th in the Premier League with just four wins from 12. However, they have been better in the Champions League, winning three of their four matches, and sit sixth of 36 in the table, just three points off the top.

6/4 is great odds for Newcastle to win away in Marseille. It won’t be an easy task against a side flying high in second in Ligue 1, but I believe Newcastle have the quality to win here. They seem to be able to turn it on in this competition, with their only defeat a narrow 2-1 loss at home to Barcelona, and I’m backing them to come away with another victory here.

This will be a close game and, despite thinking Newcastle will win, both teams to score looks a pretty safe bet. Marseille are the highest scorers in Ligue 1 with a massive 33 goals scored in 13 league matches. Despite winning only one of their Champions League matches this season, they have scored five in four. Both teams have scored in five of their last 10 in all competitions. Newcastle have scored in each of their Champions League matches, with 10 goals in four. Both teams have scored in six of their last 10. I think these two are pretty evenly matched, on paper, and that this will be an exciting, end-to-end encounter with plenty of goals.
Marseille vs Newcastle Shots on Target Tip: Harvey Barnes over 0.5 shots on target (19/20)
Harvey Barnes has made headlines throughout the last week, after he refused to rule out changing his national allegiance from England to Scotland, to represent the Scots at the World Cup. He responded to that media attention incredibly well at the weekend, scoring both of Newcastle’s goals in a 2-1 victory over Manchester City. That takes his goal tally to six for the season, with three in the Premier League and three in the Champions League. He has had five shots on target in four Champions League appearances so far this season.
ALTERNATIVE BET – Harvey Barnes to score @ 10/3
With three goals in four Champions League appearances so far, including a brace at home to Benfica, Barnes seemed to enjoy Champions League nights. He’s good odds to score at 10/3.
Yellow Card Tip: Benjamin Pavard to be booked (13/5)
I think right back Benjamin Pavard is good odds for a booking. He’s already been carded twice in his four Champions League appearances this campaign, on top of his three bookings in 10 Ligue 1 appearances, following his loan switch from Inter Milan in the summer. He has made 16 fouls in all competitions this season, eight of which have come in the Champions League, meaning he averages two fouls per game in this competition. I think there’s a strong chance he will be carded again in this one.
