Does Yaya Toure deserve another chance to prove his worth at the Etihad?

Since taking over from Manuel Pellegrini down in the Manchester City dug-out this summer, Pep Guardiola has certainly served to impress among the English top-flight thus far – via his notorious brand of possession-based play out on the pitch, as well as his coolly composed demeanour away from the field also.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has nonetheless overseen the recent demise of once loved Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure, down at the Etihad this term – whilst also playing a personal role in failing to pick the Ivorian international among his first team plans to help launch City back to the very top of the Premier League table.

It seems Guardiola has all but given up on Yaya Toure this season truth be told – but has the infamous Spanish tactician simply dealt with the 33-year-old midfielder as most pragmatic top-flight coaches would in his current position, or does the technically gifted Ivorian still have something special to offer at the Etihad despite his new manager’s rather obvious reservations?

Well, seeing as Yaya Toure’s seemingly irrelevant agent has publically criticised Guardiola for failing to select his client on several significant occasions already this season, perhaps the 33-year-old’s latest situation at the Etihad should really come as little surprise within the grand scheme of things. This ongoing war of words serves only to distract Yaya Toure from performing to the very best of his abilities, which is something that simply can’t be tolerated for long among the upper echelons of the Premier League table.

The former Barcelona defensive midfielder therefore looks to have come to the end of the road at his current club on initial appearances alone, especially as Pep Guardiola was the man to eventually remove him from the illustrious realms of the Nou Camp back in 2010 – and subsequently send him packing for the Etihad in the first place.

Such an outcome would nonetheless arrive as somewhat of a disappointment for some Manchester City fans of course, who still remember the powerful Ivorian for his dominant displays in the middle of the park, as well as his keen ability to find the back of the net on a fairly consistent basis in several seasons past…

…yet despite Yaya Toure’s once excellent ability to excite and entertain Premier League onlookers from far and wide just a few short seasons ago, the 33-year-old no longer commands a guaranteed place within the Manchester City starting XI based on his most recent contribution. Because Pep Guardiola already seems to be doing just fine without the towering Ivorian international situated among his first team plans – it remains particularly difficult to imagine Yaya Toure playing another competitive fixture at the Etihad whilst the former Barca and Bayern boss remains in charge.

If this really is the end for Yaya among the English top-flight – then farewell to the man. He’s certainly contributed his fair share whilst operating on these here shores, and that’s something not even Pep Guardiola himself could seek to take away!
