FPL Goalkeeper Tips

With the likes of Ederson and Alisson commanding 6.0m fees, there is reason to save that cash for better defenders such as Alexander-Arnold and Robertson – but which ‘keepers should be selected for your Fantasy Football team?

Fantasy Football keepers

Buy – Mat Ryan, Brighton (4.5m)

Brighton’s Australian stopper is perhaps the standout option in the 4.5m bracket. Many of last season’s 4.5m goalkeepers have received price rises, leaving a limited selection. Ryan ranked 8th for saves made in last season’s Premier League and that could be set to increase under a more attacking manager in Graham Potter. Crucially, Brighton are the only team to offer a playing keeper and back up option for 8.5m. This a huge plus point, allowing managers to stretch their budgets further, safe in the knowledge that David Button will step in for an injured or suspended Ryan.

Bin – Bernd Leno, Arsenal (5.0m)

The 5.0m price point is rich with choice in the goalkeeping department. As such, there are better choices than Arsenal’s keeper. The Gunners returned just 8 clean sheets last season, bettered by the likes of Cardiff, Bournemouth and Newcastle. At the time of writing, Arsenal are yet to make any defensive signings and Leno shows little sign of justifying his price tag. At 5.0m, five goalkeepers outscored the German, including Lukasz Fabianski and Martin Dubravka, each of whom are better prospects for save points.

FPL Defenders Tips

Do you pick high value defenders with attacking intent or go with middle of the range players in the hope of bagging some assists and clean sheets?

Defenders

Buy – Seamus Coleman, Everton (5.5m)

Coleman is somewhat of an FPL cult hero and will be looking to get back to his best after recovering from a horrifying broken leg. At the tail end of last season, the Irishman showed his FPL pedigree. He notched 85 points, outscoring teammate, Lucas Digne, between gameweek 21 and 38. Everton ended the season strongly, keeping 8 clean sheets in the final 11 games. Shutouts against the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea are a good sign going into the new campaign. The toffees have a promising set of fixtures to kick off the season, which could make Coleman a great selection.

Bin – Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Manchester United (5.5m)

Manchester United’s summer signing has been a popular pick ahead of the FPL season. Last year’s budget-friendly fullback was a revelation at Crystal Palace, picking up 3 assists and securing 12 cleans sheets for an initial 4.0m. United’s defence was comparatively less stable, only managing 7 shutouts.

At 5.5m, AWB no longer offers the same value. He was outscored by the likes of Patrick van Aanholt and Seamus Coleman who offer a greater attacking threat from defence. Nathan Ake and Willy Boly equalled Wan-Bissaka’s points total and are available for 0.5m less.

Buy – Charlie Taylor, Burnley (4.5m)

Burnley had a disappointing season after such an impressive 20117/18 campaign. With no European qualification and the possible return of Nick Pope between the sticks, Burnley look set to improve on last year’s 8 clean sheets and Taylor is a budget pick for our Fantasy Football tips at the start of the 2019/20 season.

Charlie Taylor established himself as first choice left back during the course of the season and presents a cheaper route into the Clarets backline than James Tarkowski and Ben Mee. Burnley face Norwich, Aston Villa, Brighton and Southampton in the first 7 games and could be an affordable source of clean sheet points.

Bin – Matt Ritchie, Newcastle, (5.5m)

A time will come this FPL season where Matt Ritchie is a worthwhile pick, but to start with, he’s probably best avoided. Reclassified as a defender, Ritchie offers plenty of attacking potential and is likely to play further up the pitch. The departure of Rafa Benitnez means the Scotsman may start in midfield but Newcastle will no doubt suffer defensively. 2 goals and 8 assists highlights Ritchie’s attacking potential but 5.5m is a lot to invest in Benitezless-Newcastle defender, especially given their tough start to the season. He’s best avoided for now.
