Is Toby Alderweireld on his way to Manchester United this summer?

With Spurs now in a real battle to secure a top-four finish this season, many around North London will also be concerned by the news that one of their key men could be heading North over the summer.

It has been widely reported by several news outlets that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has reluctantly accepted that Toby Alderweireld could be on his way to Manchester United.

The Belgian international is currently under contract with Spurs until the end of next season after the club triggered an extension clause back in December.

Toby Alderweireld on his way to Manchester United?

Despite Pochettino’s side being on the verge of officially moving into their long overdue new 62,000 seater home, Alderweireld has failed to commit his future to Spurs.

After signing his contract extension until the end of the 2019/2020 season, Alderweirled has a clause in his current deal that can see him leave the Lilywhites for just £26million.

According to The Mirror, Manchester United are leading the race for the 30-year-old’s signature, although Barcelona and Juventus are also interested.

During his tenure at Old Trafford, former boss Jose Mourinho had constantly been linked with a move for the central defender and it appeared he could have been on his way to Manchester last summer.

Despite the heavy speculation surrounding a potential move at the end of the season, Alderweireld has remained a vital part of Spurs’ push both in the Premier League and in Europe.

Helping Spurs reach the quarter-finals of this year’s Champions League, the 84-cap Belgian international has also made more appearances than any other Tottenham outfield player this year.

Since joining Spurs in 2015 Alderweireld has made more than 100 Premier League appearances, scoring five goals.

With it heavily believed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be installed as United’s boss on a permanent basis before the end of the season, many expect the Norweigan icon to be handed quite the treasure chest over the summer.

If Alderweireld is to make the move to Manchester United then it could see the struggling Eric Bailly be moved on.

Despite joining the Reds for £30million back in the summer of 2016, the 24-year-old has struggled to adjust to life in the Premier League.
