Are Manchester United in danger of becoming a one-man-team?

btts tips

Anybody who witnessed Manchester United’s convincing victory against the Magpies last time out, will be able to tell you what was different about the way Jose Mourinho’s team have been playing in recent weeks.

There was more attacking verve for one thing. Manchester United looked a real threat for the first time since the opening fixtures of the season. Mourinho’s strike-force had an air of menace about them – and of course, Paul Pogba was back in action, ready to supply his teammates with a range of testing delights all across the pitch.

Pogba’s overall effectiveness has surpassed his efforts recorded throughout the previous league campaign. The Frenchman has proven far more reliable this time around, offering Manchester United some much needed dynamism and artistry in the middle of the park.

Although the former Juventus man is arguably some way off reaching peak playing condition among the English top-flight, Jose Mourinho has much to be thankful for now that the quick-footed 24-year-old has finally returned to the first-team fold.

The star man at Old Trafford has been somewhat liberated of his defensive responsibilities thanks to the presence of Nemanja Matic alongside him. Within such a tactical set-up, Mourinho is free to unleash the powerful Frenchman beyond his previous central-midfield role.

Romelu Lukaku also becomes an all-round improved asset when Pogba is among the Manchester United starting XI. The big Belgian striker has struggled for form in the wake of his teammate’s absence, leading some to question the former Everton man’s ability to cut it when thrust in at the deep end.

Now that Pogba is finally back however, many expect Lukaku to lift off the shackles that have previously been holding him back, and start delivering for Manchester United with potent and deadly efficiency once again. The striker couldn’t stop scoring at the beginning of the season before Pogba’s recent injury after all.

Paul Pogba wasn’t the only high profile Manchester United man to make his reappearance back at Old Trafford this weekend of course. The Red Devils’ recent outing against Newcastle United also paved the way for none other than Zlatan Ibrahimovic to return to the first-team fold.

Although the notorious Swede was offered limited playing time in his quest to re-ignite the Premier League with his presence, the Old Trafford faithful were certainly happy to have the big man back on board. A mere glance at the talisman is enough to get the crowd going.

Could both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku soon be deployed among the same starting XI at Manchester United? Perhaps…but only if Paul Pogba is in place just behind them, pulling all the strings in his usual self-assured manner.

It remains somewhat easy to get carried away with Pogba’s ongoing potential. Although he has performed rather well down at Old Trafford thus far, Manchester United are yet to be tested against Europe’s powerhouse elite, and no prior assumptions can really be made until that point.

Yet at the same time, this is a team who look capable of achieving great things with Pogba orchestrating the majority of the play. Without their key star-man on board, it remains to be seen just how good this current Manchester United squad of players really is…
