Must Crystal Palace continue to show faith in Christian Benteke?

Crystal Palace’s latest big money striking acquisition has three Premier League goals to his name so far this season. The 25-year-old Belgian international has also been in fine form upon the international scene as of late, whilst seeming intent on helping Alan Pardew’s Eagles raise their collective stock among the English top-flight as soon as physically possible.

Yet as top-flight Premier League football can often prove something of an unforgiving business even at the best of times, some fans of the English game have recently seen fit to criticise the Crystal Palace striker after his less than effective performance against the Hammers last time out. Whilst Benteke certainly came close on the odd occasion, his glaring penalty miss just before half-time was pretty poor to say the very least.

So then, can Christian Benteke successfully rise above his recent spot-kick calamity last time out at Selhurst Park, or is it simply a matter of time before the Crystal Palace fans become wholeheartedly frustrated with the Belgian striker – much like what took place for the 25-year-old at Anfield last season?

Well, although Benteke had in-fact been in fine form coming into last weekend’s latest batch of highly anticipated Premier League fixtures, stubborn question-marks still admittedly surround the exceedingly hefty price-tag that brought him to Crystal Palace in the first place.

Alan Pardew’s club somehow saw fit to splash close to £30 million upon the services of an out of form front-man who certainly failed to make the grade at Liverpool whilst working under Jurgen Klopp last term. He has nonetheless begun the 2016/17 campaign in relatively decent form for the Eagles, but whether or not Christian Benteke can continuously prove his worth for the rest of the current season remains well and truly up for debate.

That said, perhaps the 25-year-old has now found the right club to match his goal-scoring potential among the English top-flight in Crystal Palace. The infamously testing realms of Liverpool Football Club clearly represented too much of a step up for Benteke when he first made the switch to Anfield in the summer of 2015 – yet as the collective expectations in and around Selhurst Park arguably remain far more suited to the player in question when all is said and done – now is simply no time for the Palace faithful to begin losing faith in their club’s latest big money man.

Christian Benteke will likely suffer with a few more testing injury complaints before the season is over. Expect several more glaring misses to inflict the Belgian international’s game and the Crystal Palace crowd in general whilst the 25-year-old striker continues to command the front-line of Alan Pardew’s chosen starting XI.

But will Benteke also serve to score several more vital goals for the Eagles between now and the end of the season? The answer is most likely yes – and that’s what should ultimately matter most for Crystal Palace and their plans to disrupt the upper echelons of the English top-flight in the not too distant future.
