Next Derby Manager – the main contenders

Derby owner Mel Morris has said he has already received a number of applications for the job and former Derby player Darren Moore has emerged as the current Evens favourite with Bet Victor.

Darren Moore – Evens

The name at the top of the list is former West Brom boss Darren Moore, who was sacked as West Brom manager despite guiding them to fourth place in the Championship table. This clearly wasn’t good enough for his employers and he was given the boot. However, he is the front runner to be the next Derby boss.

Phillip Cocu – 2/1

Former Barcelona player Cocu was not even considered in the betting when the market first opened, but after numerous media reports over the weekend, the former PSV boss has emerged as a real contender to be their new boss. It would be a fantastic coup for Mel Morris if he could lure such a big name to English football’s second division. His last job was in Turkey for Fenerbache, where he was sacked after just four months.

Darren Wassall – 12/1

The current Derby Under-23 boss has already had two stints as caretaker manager of the first team but judging from the noise coming out of Pride Park, they will look to recruit somebody from outside of the club. However, if Cocu or Moore don’t fit the bill then Wassall could be given a chance to impress full-time.

Danny Cowley – 12/1

The Lincoln City manager has already been linked with a few jobs this summer, and Derby is the latest post. He guided his side to win League Two last season and has many admirers. This would be a gamble as there is no guarantee he would be as good at a higher level but all the suggestions are that he would relish the opportunity.

Phil Neville – 16/1

The former Manchester United and Everton player is currently in charge of the England Women’s side who are doing so well at the World Cup, so it would be interesting to see if his head could be turned towards a job with Derby County. At 16/1 in the next Derby manager odds, Phil Neville could be a shrewd outside bet.

Chris Hughton – 16/1

Sacked by Brighton at the end last season after they narrowly avoided relegation, Chris Hughton is also in the running in the next Newcastle United manager odds. This would be a great appointment given the experience Hughton has but it may be that he doesn’t want to take a step back down from the Premier League.

Next Derby Manager – the other contenders

Steven Gerrard is another name on the next Derby manager list but it is unlikely he would leave Rangers after just one season in charge. A job like this in 12 months time could be ideal for the Liverpool legend but for now he should stay north of the border.

Roy Keane has outlined his desire to get back into club management after a couple of spells before being the Republic of Ireland assistant. However, this would be a huge gamble for Derby and there are better suited candidates than Keane for the role.

John Terry got promoted in the play-off final against Derby in May, and the Aston Villa assistant manager has emerged as an outside chance for a few jobs this summer. With Villa now in the Premier League he would be wise to have a season there as a number 2 so the odds of 33/1 are probably correct.
