New Tactical Approach

Serge Aurier has been given the freedom to roam forward in Mourinho’s new tactical setup. Spurs have been lining up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, but in attack, it’s more akin to an asymmetrical 3-2-5. In simpler terms, Tottenham’s left back dropped deeper to form a back three whilst Aurier bombed forwards to create a front five in attack against West Ham. With the Ivorian taking up such advanced positions, he’s likely to be afforded goalscoring opportunities.

Overload

Mourinho’s tactical approach means Aurier and Lucas Moura both occupy positions on the right high up the field. This is likely to create an overload on Bournemouth’s left flank at times. Diego Rico will need help from whoever is stationed in front of him, likely to be Arnaut Danjuma, who is yet to play more than 60 minutes of a Premier League game.

Form

Aurier scored his first goal of the season in midweek against Olympiakos, arriving in the box to hit a superbly controlled shot into the bottom corner. He is yet to score in the Premier League this season but had a goal ruled out by VAR thanks a marginal offside in the build-up. Evidence of his goal-scoring abilities can be seen in his record of six goals for Toulouse back in 2013/14. With Tottenham’s new system, we may see the best of Aurier in front of goal.
