What Is Transfer Betting?
If you’re new to football betting then you’re perhaps not going to know what transfer betting is all about. It’s pretty simple though and ultimately just involves betting on player transfers.
This usually comes in the form of backing a team to be the next club of a player, usually after a particular transfer window.
Therefore, a market could look as follows:
Cristiano Ronaldo – Club after January transfer window odds:
- Chelsea: 2/1
- Sporting Lisbon: 16/1
- Atletico Madrid: 20/1
In order to win the bet the player then must be at that club following the end of that transfer window. If the player doesn’t move to that club, then the bet loses.
The time stamp on the market ensures that there is an eventual date for the bet to be settled. Without it, the bet could stay open effectively for a player’s entire career.
Which Bookmakers Offer Transfer Betting
Many bookmakers offer transfer betting markets with these often heightened during the periods when the transfer window is open.
However, if a player is being highly rumoured with a move then you’ll also find a number of bookies offering markets on that player.

When To Bet On Transfers
Betting on transfers isn’t an easy task. For mere mortals, by the time it seems likely that a transfer may occur, the odds shift dramatically to offer little value, therefore betting on transfers requires a lot of research and looking in the right areas.
That means considering the following:
- What has the player/agent been saying?: Has a player or agent been speaking about certain clubs or their futures in any way? That might give insight into when and where they may go.
- Who needs that type of player?: Consider what club may be in for the player based upon what they need, the style of football they play and any particular relationships they may have with the club or it’s personnel.
- What are journalists/insiders saying?: Social media is a hotbed of people circulating rumours, but some journalists are much more respected than others. Keep an eye on those that typically have gotten moves right previously, as they’ll have a higher chance of coming off.
