Manchester United were last night crowned triumphant League Cup champions after eventually seeing off a determined Southampton side in the final. The Red Devils won by three goals to two in the end, largely off the back of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s tireless efforts in front of goal.
Yet as Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini was nonetheless denied his hat-trick after seeing a legitimate effort cancelled out by the linesman’s flag early in the first-half, subsequent question-marks have arisen in light of the clear mistake on behalf of the officials.
The instant-replays show Gabbiadini’s goal to have been onside all along…
Southampton robbed by Man U Gabbiadini clearly on side for 1st goal! Cmon you Saints pic.twitter.com/cohTTkEhnw

…but even though Saints fans do indeed have a lot to shout about after the final whistle…
Just seen the 'offside' goal. Southampton robbed by officials, feel for them. Deserve a trophy.

…stopping Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his tracks is a task much easier said than done…
Southampton have been unlucky today. Performed so well. But @Ibra_official has been the difference….like so many times this season

This isn’t the first time English officiating has come under the spotlight in recent weeks…
Wow…..Southampton robbed of a perfectly good goal. And the sickening officiating continues @FA we have the worst official in Europe

…yet as Manchester United were pretty good themselves on the day…
Southampton were unlucky but what a colossal effort from #MUFC. To win those three games in six days, then a cup final, takes guts galore.

…perhaps Southampton were just a tad unlucky when all is said and done…
Let's be honest, Southampton played Man Utd off the park, had a perfectly good goal disallowed & deserved to win…. unlucky Saints…?

Then again, things could have been oh so different…
Southampton players/fans should hold their heads high today. Wrongly disallowed goal and they've done terrific to get to the final.

…oh so different indeed…
Man Utd were poor but won't care. Ibrahimovic is remarkable. He and an errant linesman won that final. Southampton unlucky.
