The Champions League last 16 second legs get underway tonight and we have got Borussia Dortmund vs Tottenham and Real Madrid vs Ajax to kick things off, both starting at 8pm. Tomorrow night there is PSG vs Manchester United and Porto vs Roma.
In tonight’s games, it is Tottenham who are in the strongest position after beating Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley three weeks ago. That result has come at a time when Dortmund are in poor form and they’ve almost lost their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table. They’ve only won one of their last seven matches in all competitions now and face an uphill task against Spurs tonight.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid hold a 2-1 advantage over Ajax going into tonight’s second leg in the Spanish capital but Madrid go into this tie off the back of two straight losses to their arch rivals Barcelona – can Ajax capitalise on this and overturn the deficit?
As always, there are plenty of the usual betting markets to get involved with tonight but we have picked out a bet from two of the more obscure markets, one for each of tonight’s Champions League fixtures.
The first selection for tonight is from Germany and we want to bet on a goals statistic. Of their 12 goals in the Champions League so far this season, 11 of them have come in the second half of matches. This stat was enhanced in the first leg when all three goals came in the second half at Wembley. Dortmund did not concede a lot of goals in the group stage – just just in fact, but at that stage of the season they were on a remarkable run that left them clear at the top of the Bundesliga, and top of their Champions League group.
Since the start of February, Dortmund have played seven times and have only kept one clean sheet (a 0-0 draw vs Nurnburg) so Spurs will be confident of getting an away goal tonight. They have the luxury of a 3-0 lead and know they will get chances on the break as Dortmund push for goals. As the match opens up in the second half we’re predicting a goal or two for Spurs.
Bet on Tottenham to score over 0.5 second half goals tonight at odds of 8/11 with Paddy Power.

The other game tonight is in Madrid where holders Real Madrid host an exciting young Ajax team, who have scored 13 goals in three matches since the first leg in Amsterdam. Los Blancos have had a very different time of things since that narrow 2-1 victory, losing to Barcelona in both the Copa Del Rey and La Liga. They failed to score in both of those matches and Gareth Bale was booed off at the Bernabeu on Saturday evening.
Young Ajax star Hakim Ziyech scored his first ever Champions League goal in the first leg of this tie but more importantly for this betting tip, it was his 30th shot in the competition. With that in mind, we’re using the Paddy Power ‘shots on target’ market for our second Champions League tip tonight and going with Ziyech to have 2+ shots on target at odds of 5/2.
It is worth noting that Real Madrid have lost two of their last five home matches in the Champions League and they are not the force they were when Cristiano Ronaldo was leading from the front in matches.
