Derby vs West Brom Preview

The Rams slipped up in midweek, suffering their first loss of the campaign at home to Bristol City. Phillip Cocu’s men are clearly having problems keeping sides off the score-sheet with both the Robins and Stoke firing two goals past Kelle Roos. Derby’s defending for Andreas Weimann’s opening goal left a lot to be desired, and it’s an area which they clearly need to work on. Although I expect them to be challenging for a top six spot once again, they do look weaker than last season, and they don’t to have the creative spark to unlock the opposition defence. Their only victory this season came courtesy of two Tom Lawrence wonder-goals, and more of a team effort is needed here. There is no reason to panic just yet, and Cocu seems like the ideal man to steer things in the right direction, but he must galvanise this group of players. If Jack Marriott has sufficiently recovered from his injury issues, he should be given a start in this tie. The former Ipswich man unleashed a rocket here on Tuesday night, and could easily make the difference if given the nod.

West Brom haven’t quite clicked under Slaven Bilic yet. The Baggies needed a late intervention from the penalty spot to level against Reading on Wednesday night, with Kenneth Zohore getting his first goal for the club. They remain unbeaten in the Championship, and beating hard to beat is an excellent trait to have at this level, although they need to start turning draws into wins. They are yet to keep a clean sheet in the league, and still look vulnerable to aerial bombardment. They’ve drawn both games at the Hawthornes, and have won their two matches on the road. Bilic gave a start to Grady Diangana in midweek, but he may be best deployed from the bench this season as an impact sub. He needs to get more out of Charlie Austin as well. Similar to today’s opponents, WBA look like a work-in-progress, but they look further ahead, and they will be tough to beat once again.

Derby vs West Brom Betting Tips

This could actually be a very good game for the neutral. Derby are playing some decent stuff going forward, and despite the additions of Krystian Beilik and Matt Clarke, they still don’t look 100% watertight at the back. West Brom have plenty of exciting players going forward, and Matt Phillips should enjoy running at this Rams defence. Goals are expected between these two sides, and Over 2.5 Goals is a bet which would have paid out in each of the last five meetings between this pair. The games ended 1-3 and 4-1 last season, and were certainly full of chances. I expect another end-to-end encounter on Saturday lunchtime. Over 2.5 Goals is 4/5 with William Hill. ‘

We’re not sure if Jack Marriott will start this game, but at 23/10, it could be worth taking the risk anyway. The striker has been excellent over the last couple of years, and was a real nuisance during his fleeting appearances last season. He scored a belter in midweek, and if he’s given the nod ahead of Waghorn here, he should be able to notch. He scored the opening goal in Derby’s romp at the Hawthornes last season, and could easily score against WBA once more.
