Favourites are not guaranteed to win this race as 25/1 winner Labaik proved in the 2017 renewal but Willie Mullins is confident that Getabird can win the opening race of the meeting and get our Cheltenham accumulator tip off to a flying start. Although the horse has never raced on a left-handed track for Mullins, he has won each of his four contests for the trainer including twice this season. Getabird was impressive when beating useful rivals in his latest start at Punchestown after lengthening his stride when asked to quicken in the closing stages.
The Nicky Henderson trained horse Buveur D’air comfortably won the Champion Hurdle last year and has won his four subsequent races. His last win at Sandown was not so impressive when beating John Constable but jockey Barry Geraghty may have been saving the horse for more important engagements. Current second favourite Faugheen may not be the force of previous seasons and the remaining horses are likely to be seeking place prize money.
888Sport Cheltenham Offers:
Having never finished outside of the first two positions in her hurdling career to date, Apple’s Jade is set to repeat her win in the Mares Hurdle from last season and get us another winner in our Cheltenham Festival accumulator tips. Trained by Gordon Elliott, she has won all three races this term culminating in the narrow defeat of Supasundae who has been tipped to win the Stayers Hurdle. She displayed battling qualities to beat several other rivals and has been rested since that Leopardstown victory back in December.
Having comfortably won the Arkle Trophy last season, Altior was tipped to follow that success by winning the 2018 Champion Chase. However, a wind operation cast those hopes into doubt until he reappeared at Newbury last month. In the Betfair Exchange Chase, he beat the much fitter Politologue by four lengths with the pair renewing rivalry in this contest. With doubts regarding the fitness of last season’s favourite Douvan, Willie Mullins may view Min as his more likely contender to win this race, but he was easily beaten by Altior in the 2016 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle so it’s Altior who goes into this Cheltenham Festival accumulator bet.
Since moving to the Willie Mullins stable from France, Laurina has won both of her hurdle races by fifteen and eleven lengths respectively. Her latest victory at Fairyhouse back in January was achieved when accelerating from the final hurdle with the minimum of effort. Maria’s Benefit is likely to be one of her most difficult opponents to date after winning five successive hurdle races, but there appears more improvement to come from Laurina, and she could be difficult to beat.
Getabird – Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, Tuesday 1.30

Apple’s Jade – Mares Hurdle, Tuesday 4.10
Altior – Champion Chase, Wednesday 3.30
