The 2019 Copa America is almost upon us and this year’s renewal will take place in Brazil, the hosts of the 2014 World Cup. They are favourites to win the tournament on their home turf, but who else can challenge for the title?
After the South American sides disappointed at the 2018 World Cup, they will all want to do well in the 2019 Copa America and the most pressure will be on the hosts Brazil, who are going to be without star man Neymar following his recent ankle injury in a friendly.
First match: 15th June 2019 – Brazil vs Bolivia.

At the time of writing, Brazil are the tournament favourites at odds of 11/10 with bet365. Argentina are second favourites at 15/4 and then it’s Uruguay at 7/1. Colombia are 9/1 and Chile 12/1. The prices after that are 25/1 or bigger with outsiders such as Peru (25/1), Paraguay (33/1) and Venezuela (40/1) looking to upset the pre-tournament favourites.
It seems as though Brazil are worthy favourites for the tournament, but there is no denying that it will be a huge blow to them to be without Neymar. Another stumbling block for the Seleção could be the pressure of playing on home soil. This was evident in the 2014 World Cup when they were nervous and put in one of the worst displays ever seen from a Brazilian side in that famous 7-1 defeat to eventual winners Germany.
For all their talents, Argentina never really turn it on at big tournaments and it is a mystery how Lionel Messi has not picked up any major trophies with his nation. Alongside the likes of Sergio Aguero, Paulo Dybala and Angel Di Maria, Messi will want to get his hands on a trophy for his country. There are a few big omissions from the squad including Gonzalo Higuain, Gabriel Mercado, Angel Correa and Mauro Icardi. The big worry for Argentina is in goal and defensively, so it is hard to be confident in any Copa America predictions for a win here.
Uruguay were fancied to do well at World Cup 2018 but they could only manage a quarter final place. They played some good football and have the ever impressive front-line of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani in their squad. Those two players alone give Uruguay a good chance of going deep into the tournament having already got 101 international goals between them, and they also have the vastly experienced Diego Godin in defence. They have been handed a relatively tough group including Chile but Alexis Sanchez and Vidal are not the forces of old so we’d be confident of Uruguay winning their tie. No slipups against Ecuador and Japan should see them though to the latter stages. They should get an easy quarter final against third place from either Group B or C and then it’s anybodies tournament with the usual Copa America shocks predicted.
Of the other teams in the tournament, Venuzuela are of interest at massive odds. They have to compete with the hosts in Group A, however they are in a rich vein of form going into the tournament and if they can get second place ahead of Bolivia and Peru, they’ll give themselves a good chance of a semi-final spot. They will need to overcome Argentina or Colombia in the quarter finals (if they finish second in Group A) so we’ll be hoping for a shock there. However, they have recently beaten a full strength Argentina side in a friendly and won 3-0 against the United States last time out. At odds of 40/1, it is hard to ignore Venezuela as an outside prediction for the 2019 Copa America.
The Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus second in the betting odds for top goalscorer, this follows the omission of Neymar. However, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is also in the squad so just like the World Cup last summer, they could share the striking responsibilities. Everton’s Richarlison will also chip in with the odd goal you’d presume.
Lionel Messi is the obvious favourite at odds of 3/1 but that is short, even for a player of his talents as it remains to be seen how far Argentina will go in the tournament. Keep up to date with our match previews to see if we’re tipping Messi to score in any of Argentina’s games.
Our Copa America prediction of Uruguay to win the tournament could well be backed up by one of their big two players getting the top scorer accolade as well. There is always the risk that these two will share the goals as they so often do, but it is hard to overlook them in our betting tips.
They’re both 8/1 and our slight preference is for Luis Suarez. He scored in Uruguay’s most recent friendly against Panama and twice against Mexico a few games ago. He is more of a poacher than Cavani and if the two link up as well as they did for goals at the World Cup, it would be no surprise to see Suarez get a few goals in the early group matches against the likes of Japan and Ecuador.
