Could England still call upon Fabian Delph at Euro 2016?

Before eventually sealing his big money switch to the Etihad last summer, and subsequently marking himself out as a somewhat disloyal customer in and around the Villa Park faithful in the process, Fabian Delph was someone who many initially deemed capable of achieving great things for England on the international scene.

The 26-year-old midfielder has nevertheless failed to hit the ground running for Manuel Pellegrini’s expensively assembled Manchester City outfit in 2015/16 however – and after breaking-down with a potential season-ending injury last time out in the Premier League – it remains to be seen whether or not the former Aston Villa man will receive due consideration from Roy Hodgson when all is said and done.

So, if the previously capped England international does in-fact manage to declare himself fit for the upcoming tournament due to be held in France this summer, which isn't entirely impossible let's face it – does Fabian Delph genuinely deserve a place at Euro 2016 with the illustrious Three Lions squad, or will the hotly coveted competition ultimately come too soon for the hopeful Citizens midfielder?

Well, if the decision were to be based on the opinion of certain critical voices out there on social media, the outcome seemingly wouldn’t turn out too promising for the recently acquired Manchester City player…

As Fabian Delph has certainly suffered with a range of testing injury concerns throughout the majority of the 2015/16 campaign thus far – and simply failed to look all that exciting whenever handed the rare starting opportunity among Manuel Pellegrini’s first team set-up down at the Etihad  – perhaps this is one of many over-hyped England players that doesn't quite warrant a place at the upcoming international tournament.

The 26-year-old centre-midfielder was admittedly beginning to show some promising signs in an Aston Villa shirt not so long ago, yet as he has so far failed to establish himself as a first team regular down at the Etihad in 2015/16, do England really require a player like Delph at Euro 2016 this summer?

The likes of Danny Drinkwater and Marc Albrighton – to name but a few of the refreshingly surprising names to impress among the Premier League this season – arguably deserve to be prioritized over Delph on the back of a variety of performance based factors. Although it makes sense to keep a core group of England players solidified within the team throughout the run up to the highly anticipated tournament itself, the current Manchester City battler seemingly hasn’t contributed enough this term with all things considered

England need an equal dose of fresh energy and new convictions going into Euro 2016 this summer – and whilst Fabian Delph is by no means finished among the international scene after seeing out one forgettable campaign within the English top-flight – Roy Hodgson possibly has enough midfield options to contend with at the moment, without even bringing the former Villa Park favourite up for discussion.

In the end, Manchester City’s Fabian Delph still remains a strong player with a decent future in and amongst the ever-competitive Premier League. The following compilation clearly draws upon such a notion…

…but as Delph's recent injury alone will potentially prove enough to keep him out of Roy Hodgson's thoughts for good this summer, maybe the 26-year-old's time to shine upon the international scene will simply have to arrive at another stage down the line…
