Belgium vs Republic of Ireland Betting Tips and Predictions

Belgium vs Republic of Ireland betting tips and predictions for the Euro 2016 Group E fixture on Saturday 19th June with the best odds for each bet.

Belgium look to bounce back from their disappointing opening game defeat to Italy as they take on the Republic of Ireland of the second round of matches in Group E. The match is a 2pm kick off this Saturday and can be found on ITV. As always, here are our match predictions and betting tips for that clash.

Belgium vs Republic of Ireland Predictions

Considering they are one of the favourites for the competition, Belgium certainly didn’t play like it a few days ago as they were well-beaten on the night by an Italian side that were good value for their three points. Marc Wilmot’s team looked fresh out of ideas after falling behind as they struggled to make any inroads on a well organised and stubborn Italy backline.

However, the few openings that did fall their way, though, were eventually squandered by Merseyside duo Romelu Lukaku and Divok Origi – with the latter particularly at fault following a glaring miss with his head late on. If Belgium are to have any chance in this competition they are going to need to be more clinical in front of goal as chances at international level are often few and far between.

In stark contrast, opponents Ireland looked good in their opening fixture against Sweden and were perhaps unlucky not to win the match based on the overall balance of play. Martin O’Neil’s side defended resolutely and managed to restrict Zlatan Ibrahimovic to merely pot-shots from distance. Although the big Swede did have a hand in the equalising goal, though, as he forced the unfortunate Kieron Clarke – who had an otherwise solid game – to head into his own net.

At the other end of the pitch Shane Long put in another tireless shift up front and was a constant thorn in the side of the Swedish defence, but it was the evergreen Wes Hoolahan who was the hero as he ghosted in to score a supurb half-volley to give the Irish the lead. Although they were hanging on a bit at the end, the performance will have offered a lot of encouragement ahead of their crunch tie with Belgium this weekend.

Heading into that match and the bookies still have Belgium as clear favourites and they are generally trading at 8/11 across the board. However, with both Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne rated as slight injury doubts, you might be better served holding tight for the team news should you feel the urge to back them early. Elsewhere, Ireland are priced well out at 9/2, with the draw available at 14/5.

Predictions time, and I’m going to throw a little caution to the wind and suggest backing the draw for my first Belgium vs Republic of Ireland prediction. Although Belgium have the better players, it’s become perfectly clear they are really struggling to perform as a team and they offer me no confidence whatsoever in terms of backing them. Ireland have performed well in big games against the likes of Germany and Bosnia in qualifying and I think they’ll have more than enough about them to pick up a positive result on Saturday. Therefore, back the draw outright at 14/5 with Sky Bet.

Moving over to the both teams to score market and Belgium have seen these outcomes fall in seven of their last eight games in all competitions, and have only kept one clean sheet in their last twelve matches – even this was only against Cyprus as well. With this in mind, I can see there being an excellent opportunity to take advantage of a decent price of 10/11 with Betfred to see both teams find the net for my second Belgium vs Republic of Ireland betting tip.

Finally, we’re going to finish with an anytime scorer betting tip for Belgium vs Ireland and hopefully set up a clean sweep. With injury doubts and poor form rife in the Belgium camp, I’m going to have a pop at Shane Long to pick up a goal in this one as the Southampton man is extremely kindly priced with several bookmakers in the market. Long looked sharp up top against Sweden last time out and could be a potent weapon for the Irish on the counter attack. Therefore, back Long to score anytime at 10/3 with Paddy Power.
