Euro 2020 Preview – The Pros and Cons of Hosting Matches Around Europe
Euro 2020 is almost here and we are as excited as we can be. The best national teams in Europe, and in the world, for that matter, will finally size up their strengths in what seems to be the most competitive and most exciting European championship in history.
One of the biggest changes that this Euro had concerns the host country. Instead of the tournament being hosted in one or two countries, the games will be held throughout the continent. There was some backlash concerning this decision, which is why we wanted to take a look at this case and name all of the pros and cons. Let’s start with the pros first.
The Pros
As mentioned, Euro 2020 will be held in multiple countries. There are a total of 11 venues throughout Europe. The first pro that we can think of is the fact that Euro 2020 will be more available to fans than ever before. Those who cannot travel to one specific country will be pleased to hear that some matches will be held at a more reachable destination, maybe even in their home country.
Not only that, but the level of neutrality will be increased as many of the teams will play on these venues for the first time. The fact that no team will have the upper hand will bring a lot of excitement, fun, and will make the matches unpredictable.
Finally, this is the European championship, so it does have a bit of logic to have multiple venues in many countries. Hosting it in just one country would seem a bit unfair to the rest of the continent and would give the host the upper hand. Tourism might also have a bit of a boost.
The Cons
As for the cons, there is just one, which is excessive traveling for some nations. This was the main critic of the new format about the host. Players will have to travel to other countries every two days just to play one match. Critics have stated that this has the potential to lower the quality of the football and make it impossible for fans to support their team because they will be required to travel throughout Europe, which is practically impossible to do in such a short period, and during a pandemic.
Conclusion
The fact of the matter is, there is no way to determine whether the new host format is good or bad. We’ll need to judge that only after the Euro has been held. Whatever the outcome will be, the good thing is that we’ll be able to learn a lot from it and see if it is good to have a format such as this one or not, thus know whether to use it in the future.
Finally, if you are wondering which countries/cities are hosts for Euro 2020, they are Amsterdam, Baku, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome, Saint Petersburg, and Seville. The final will be held in London at Wembley Stadium, on July 11th.
