FC Koln vs Borussia Dortmund Preview

FC Koln may have been champions of the 2.Bundesliga last season, but they gave their fans plenty of scares along the way. Markus Anfang is gone, and he is replaced by Achim Beierlorzer, who was last seen managing the brilliantly entertaining Jahn Regensburg. The new man is completely devoid of top flight experience having previously been assistant to Ralf Rangnick at RB Leipzig. His sides typically play some excellent easy-on-the-eye football, and they also press very well. They won’t make it easy for Dortmund. They lost 2-1 at Wolfsburg on the opening weekend, but they did manage 11 shots in that game, and rallied in the second half. They outpassed their opponents, and Beierlorzer’s sides typically command plenty of possession. They haven’t faced BVB since 2018, but their previous meetings have been very entertaining with a 2-3 defeat here and a heavy 5-0 defeat at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund began the season in ideal fashion. Whilst Bayern could only labour to a draw with Hertha Berlin, Dortmund netted three goals in eight minutes to see off Augsburg. It was a relatively straightforward afternoon for the yellow and blacks, and this is unlikely to be as simple. They fell behind after just 31 second which was far from ideal, but they always looked threatening at the other end of the pitch. Paco Alcacer laid down his credentials for the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer with a brace whilst Jadon Sancho added another few thousand onto his price tag with a well-taken goal. Julian Brandt, one of many summer recruits also got off the mark. Last season, Lucien Favre’s men failed to win nearly 50% of their away games, and that’s an area in which they must improve this time around.

FC Koln vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Tips

At the time of writing, Dortmund are around 7/10 to win this game, and that is absolutely fair enough. However, we can increase this slightly by chucking in Over 2.5 Goals. This is available at 4/5 with Betfred, and would have landed in four of Dortmund’s last six away games last season. FC Koln will create chances in this game, and BVB look far from secure at the back – as demonstrated on Saturday.

Paco Alcacer is a classy operator at this level, and the former Barca man is off to a play. He netted in the German Super Cup, in the DFB Pokal, and bagged a brace at the weekend in the opening Bundesliga clash. He netted 22 times in all competitions last season, and that was despite starting a large amount of games on the bench. He is particularly potent in the second half, so backing him to find the net after the break could be a more adventurous option here, but we’re going to stick with the Evens on him just to notch anytime.
