Tottenham were beaten 5-1 at St James’ Park in their final fixture of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign, but they won five games on away soil in league action from early April onwards last term and they visit a Newcastle team newly promoted from the Championship yet beaten in five home matches last season. Rafael Benitez will ensure the Magpies are difficult to beat this term but after winning promotion to the top flight in 1993, Newcastle were beaten 1-0 at home by Spurs in their opening Premier League fixture. A similar result could occur in Sunday.
Tottenham to beat Newcastle.
A late equaliser netted by Nelson Oliveira earned Norwich a deserved 1-1 draw at automatic promotion hopefuls Fulham in their opening Championship game of the season, and the Canaries scored three first half goals in beating useful League Two team Swindon 3-2 in EFL Cup action on Tuesday evening. Opponents Sunderland will arrive at Carrow Road having beaten Bury 1-0 in a Thursday evening cup tie after drawing 1-1 with Derby in their opening league game of the campaign. It already appears that manager Simon Grayson will ensure that the Black Cats will be a difficult team to beat this term, and they could earn another point on Sunday.
Norwich to draw with Sunderland.
Although Wigan opened their League One campaign by securing a decent 1-0 win at MK Dons last weekend, with the hosts tipped for a top six finishing position, the Latics were rather fortunate to claim a 2-1 EFL Cup win in midweek when playing Blackpool at the DW Stadium. Bury will be their visitors on Sunday. Yet visitors Bury rarely troubled the Sunderland goalkeeper during a 1-0 midweek cup tie defeat and produced a far from convincing performance when beating Walsall 1-0 last weekend. Home advantage could allow Wigan to maintain their 100% start to the season and keep our football accumulator tips going.
Wigan to beat Bury.
After a nine-year absence from French Ligue 1, Strasbourg began their top-flight campaign by suffering a 4-0 defeat at Lyon and could have suffered a greater loss but for wasteful finishing by the hosts. Strasbourg now host a Lille team apparently rejuvenated since the summer arrival of former Marseille boss Marcelo Bielsa as manager. Despite suffering a few scares in defence last weekend, Lille comfortably beat Nantes 3-0 on home turf with Nicolas De Preville following on from his 14 league goals last term by converting a penalty. Lille could add further misery for Strasbourg by winning this encounter.
Lille to beat Strasbourg.
For the first half of their match at Marseille last weekend, Dijon threatened the home goal on several occasions but were eventually comfortably beaten 3-0 by the hosts. In a difficult start to their campaign, Dijon now face champions Monaco, although the visitors needed to equalise twice before beating Toulouse 3-2 at Stade Louis II last weekend. Although Monaco only drew at Dijon last term and transfer speculation remains regarding their players, a narrow away win is forecasted.
Monaco to beat Dijon.
