Zozo Championship Betting Tips & Preview: Patrick Reed to Bounce Back to Winning Ways
It is another stellar event on the PGA Tour this week and Tiger Woods defends his Zozo Championship title albeit at a different venue. Read our comprehensive Zozo Championship betting tips and preview for this week’s PGA event.
This PGA Tour event made history last year by being the first to be played on Japanese soil but due to the pandemic, we are back to the USA for the second Zozo Championship.
We head to California to enjoy Sherwood Golf Club, a course Tiger and a few others will know well as it used to be the venue for the Hero World Challenge that Tiger hosts in December. Big names feature at the top of the market and it is a great betting heat for us to get stuck into this week.
- Sherwood Golf Club, California.
- Par 72.
- 7,073 yards.
Jack Nicklaus designed this course and it is relatively short for a modern-day par 72. There are five par 5s on the course and 5 par 3s. Quite an unusual layout for a PGA Tour golf course. There are only four par 4s on the opening nine holes, meaning players will be looking to score early.
The course is set up for iron players and accurate iron play will be rewarded, something to take into consideration for our Zozo Championship betting tips this week. The winners on this course are usually major winners. Three of the last four winners on this course have all won the US Open.
All four days of the Zozo Championship are live on Sky Sports from 10pm.
Zozo Championship Tips
My first selection is PATRICK REED 22/1 E/W (WILLIAM HILL 1/5 1,2,3,4,5,6,7). Reed really caught the eye for me at Wentworth as he appeared to be hitting it a lot straighter off the tee which is key to his success. He had been struggling to find fairways but that changed on his latest start and that 3rd place finish last time out where he closed with a stunning eagle 3 on the 18th will give Reed confidence he can continue to progress as we approach the Masters. He has been going through swing changes to help get some more feel back in his swing and I believe this is the correct move. His short game is up there with the games best and with plenty of wedge approach shot opportunities this week I expect him to challenge here.
My next selection is PATRICK CANTLAY 30/1 E/W (WILLIAM HILL 1/5 1,2,3,4,5,6,7). Cantlay played very well two weeks ago when looking like the man to beat for three rounds before a slow start on Sunday cost him any chance of winning. It wasn’t a big surprise that caused him to get off to a slow start at last weeks CJ Cup but he improved as the week went on and finished with a strong -5 67 on the final round. He now returns to his belovered bent grass greens which is the surface he loves most. He has won around Muirfield Village which has a similar feel to this weeks venue Sherwood GC so it looks destined to suit this prolific ball striker who bids to finish the year strongly.
My next selection is VIKTOR HOVLAND 30/1 E/W (WILLIAM HILL 1/5 1,2,3,4,5,6,7). Hovland is another youngster who has a big reputation after his college career and he has made a very pleasing start to his PGA Tour career. There is plenty of par 5s for players to get stuck into this week and it was eye-catching that Hovland sat third in par 5 scoring last week. He looked a little ring rusty at the start of last week and a very slow start cost him any chance. He was another player who got stronger as the week went on and he managed to finished in a tie for 12th. I think he will continue that on and start well this week before contending for the title come Sunday.
My final selection is JOAQUIN NIEMANN 33/1 E/W (WILLIAM HILL 1/5 1,2,3,4,5,6,7). Niemann has been in fine form of late with three top 15s finishes in his last five starts. He was really impressive last week and he was top of the Greens In Regulations stats last week which shows his iron play is as good as ever. I’m hoping the putter can warm up just a little more this week on a course that will suit even more than last weeks venue did. He will only be inspired by the success of the other youngsters around him such as Morikawa and Wolff and I’m sure he is capable of adding his name to that list very soon.
