Newbury racing tips

Saturday’s ITV Racing tips come from Newbury’s flat card and the summer jumps meeting at Market Rasen before the live coverage concludes with the Irish Oaks from the Curragh.

The action gets underway at 1.50pm from Newbury and that is where our tipping competition is coming from today. There will be £50 inc ash to the winner and you’ll also be entered into the Racing Stars Newbury game, with a gauaranteed prize pot of £250 or more to the winner.

1:50 Newbury

The bet365 Stakes known to many as the Stevenson Stakes is our first race today, a listed race over 1m2f.

I like GROCER JACK (11/4) here. A new addition to the William Haggas start this season, his two runs at the yard have shown significant signs of promise. He was held up at Chantilly last time out eventually finishing 4th but that run gave the impression this drop back to 1m2f could prove ideal. He now drops to listed company and I think getting 3lb off the favourite could prove significant.

2:05 Market Rasen

The first of our jumps action from Market Rasen comes up at 2:05 and it is a 3m handicap hurdle.

I like ASK PADDINGTON (4/1) here. I’m surprised he isn’t favourite in all honesty, he’s a horse that’s been on a real role recently winning his last three starts. He is clearly thriving and I think this race will suit well as there’s plenty of pace on and he likes to sit off the pace. He steps up in trip but on quick enough ground round here, I think he can see it out well enough to come out on top.

2:21 Newbury

The 2:21 from Newbury is a wide-open handicap for the stayers over an extended 2m.

The one for me here is ROCK EAGLE (9/2) NAP. The Beckett and Rob Hornby had a stellar weekend last week and I think that can continue here. Rock Eagle improved for his reappearance effort after a long spell out when running a cracker at Royal Ascot behind Coltrane who has since boosted the form with another win. He finished 6th that day but his stamina just gave up close to home . That was over 2m4f so the return to 2m looks perfect today.

2:41 Market Rasen

The 2:41 is another handicap hurdle but this time over the minimum trip of 2 miles.

I like CIRQUE ROYAL (10/3) NB here. A winner on his last two starts, he is another that appears to be thriving at the moment. He was an impressive winner at Kelso last time out and I think he can go in again off the same mark. I like horses thriving over the summer jumps season and he certainly fit that bill.

2:56 Newbury

Next up from Newbury is the Hackwood Stakes, a Group 3 contest over 6f.

The one for me is HAPPY ROMANCE (4/1). She has been operating at a higher level than this race this season and she has been bang there every time really. She was drawn on the wrong side of the track last week at Newmarket so I thought she done well to be only be beaten just over 5l. The quick back up is no concern as she has run well before off a short break and she is a course and distance winner as she won this last year.

3:14 Market Rasen

The feature from Market Rasen comes up at 3:14 and it the competitive Summer Plate Handicap Chase, a trappy handicap over an extended 2m5f.

I’ve landed on LA DOMANIALE (15/2) EW here. One of the more unexposed in the line-ups, she is improving rapidly. She likes to sit handy which looks ideal in a race of this nature and albeit it was only a 3 runner race last time out, she jumped impressively and won easily by 7L. This is of course a completely different test, but if she can get into a nice jumping rhythm early on, I think she can go very close off this mark of 125.

3:30 Newbury

The last race from Newbury is the Super Sprint Stakes over 6f and it’s another competitive renewal.

I’ve landed on DARE TO HOPE (16/1) EW here. A winner on debut for Richard Fahey, he very nearly followed up at Ripon last time out going down by a short head. Richard Fahey is in fine form with both his 2 year-old and his sprinters so this appears to be a good match. He’s drawn high which is the place to be in my opinion and he’ll be staying on well. Should hopefully hit the frame at least at a decent each-way price.

3:45 Curragh

The feature is the Group 1 Irish Oaks for the 3 year-old fillies over 1m4f.

The ante-post favourite Emily Upjohn won’t be taking her chance so the race has opened up and there is nothing that really excites me. Magical Lagoon should run her race and hit the frame. I’ll take a chance that rank outsider SHOW OF STARS (20/1) EW hits the frame. She is the likely pace angle and she should get her own way in front. Trainer Paddy Twomey can’t do much wrong this season and he had one hit the frame in the Irish Derby at a decent price. He doesn’t throw them in the races for a laugh so her homework must be good. She’s a huge price and hopefully she can improve and hit the frame.
