Newmarket and Newbury Racing Tips for Saturday 14th May on ITV Racing

Newmarket racecourse

1:35 Newbury

The opener on ITV is the Carnarvon Stakes, a listed contest over the 6f trip.

The selection here is EHRAZ (4/1) NAP for the Richard Hannon team. She shown promise as 2 year-old that included a convincing maiden victory, he has since returned in the Pavillion Stakes finishing third behind the useful Go Bears Go. She looked in need of that run and I think she can improve for that run today and go close here.

1:50 Newmarket

The first race live from HQ comes up at 1:50 and it is the Denbury Homes Fairway Stakes over 1m2f.

The selection here is GROUNDBREAKER (6/1) for the Balding stable. He stepped up significantly on his 2 year-old effort and for the fitting of a good when bolting up on his seasonal return at Doncaster. That was a telling effort given a lot of the stable runners have improved for the first outing. The hood stays on, and I think he can kick on again after getting off the mark last time out.

2:10 Newbury

The Al Rayyan Stakes is up next from Newbury, a Group 3 contest over 1m4f.

It’s ESHAADA (7/2) for me here for the Roger Varian yard. A previous winner here at Newbury, she managed to win on only her fifth career start at Group 1 Level on Champions Day at Ascot to round off her 3 year-old campaign. She’s likely to improve again now she’s only 4 and this only her sixth career start. If she’s fully tuned up today, she’ll prove tough to beat in my opinion.

2:25 Newmarket

The 2:25 from Newmarket is a 6f handicap for the 3 year-olds.

The one for me here is ERNIES VALENTINE NB (15/2)EW. He won 50% of his races last season with 3 wins from 6 starts so he certainly knows how to get his head in front. He made an eye-catching return to action this season when finishing a staying on sixth over this course and distance. He was the only horse who really made up any ground from off the pace in that contest and now with that run under his belt, I think he’ll be primed for this. A claimer also helps taken off 7lb and he goes in first time blinkers which could squeeze out even more improvement.

2:45 Newbury

The 2:45 from Newbury is a competitive renewal of the London Gold Cup Handicap over 1m2f.

The one I’ve landed on here is RED VINEYARD (6/1). Three career starts to date, he made it 2 wins from 3 starts when winning a decent handicap at Sandown on his seasonal debut. That form has been boosted since with the third placed runner since winning and I think there’s plenty more to come from him. Tom Marquand is an encouraging jockey booking.

3:00 Newmarket

The next race is the 3:00 from Newmarket and it is another trappy handicap, this time over the 7f distance.

I’ll chance BULLACE (14/1) EW here. A very smart horse when bringing the A game, she lost her way a little towards the back end of last season. However, she’s been freshened up since with 7 months off the track and zhe managed to win a race here at Newmarket on her seasonal debut last season which has to bode well today. I think she’s capable of winning off her current mark if on a going day and I’m happy to chance her fresh here.

3:20 Newbury

Our final race on ITV is the feature race of the day, the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over the mile.

I’ll take the favourite on from an each-way perspective here and the one I’ll chance is SIR BUSKER (50/1) EW at a huge prices. He’ll be ridden off the pace by Hollie Doyle and will be well suited by the strong gallop he’ll get here as that really suits his running style given his handicap record over straight mile trips. He has won here at Newbury and hes already snook a run under his belt when second in a four runner race at Ascot last month. This type of race will suit more, albeit it’s a more deeper race. I can see him running into a place.
