Trainer Quotes

  • The Conditional
  • Kildisart
  • Vindication
  • Two for Gold

The Conditional

The Conditional is one of the market leaders for the Ladbrokes Trophy on Saturday and trainer David Bridgewater is expectant that is stable star can go one better than 12 months ago where he finished second in the race.

“He’s in good nick and we’re looking forward to the race. Brendan [Powell] schooled him on Monday morning and all went well. It’s his first time out this season and it is a seriously competitive race, so we wouldn’t be expecting to win but instead just hopeful of a good run.”

The Conditional will be making his first appearance of this season this weekend, something that could play against Bridgewater’s runner. Most of the other leading contenders do have a run under their belt.

The Conditional finished second in this race last year.

Kildisart

After being just held off in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, Kildisart is another of the leading contenders for the Ladbrokes Trophy this weekend.

He finished second in the Grade 2 bet365 Hurdle at Weatherby last month and trainer Ben Pauling sounds confident he can go one better at Kempton this weekend:

“Kildisart had a nice gallop last week at Newbury and has come out nicely,” Pauling said. “I was really happy with the way he worked and he schooled beautifully the following morning, so most of his prep work is done. He’ll do a little piece of work on Tuesday then everything is set.”

“We’re positive about his chances, he’s run well in big handicaps in the past and is a horse with a good profile for the race. But it is a Ladbrokes Trophy and you have to have a bit of luck!”

Vindication

Earlier this week, Kim Bailey all but confirmed that Vindication will take his chance in this weekend’s 2020 Ladbrokes Trophy but a final decision will be made on Thursday.

His yard are in fantastic form going into this weekend’s big race and he has high hopes of a big run from one of his stable stars.

The horse finished second to Cyrname in the Charlie Hall Chase earlier this month and that puts him in with a great chance of winning the Ladbrokes Trophy on Saturday.

“I’ve left the two in and will make a final decision on Thursday, but Vindication is more or less certain,” said Bailey.

“He was so fresh schooling at Newbury last week, but that’s him and I’m not the least bit concerned about it. He’d been to Newbury before and did exactly the same and then proceeded to run an absolute screamer, so I’m relaxed.

“He’s going to carry top weight or near top weight by 1lb and he’s not necessarily suited by a King George, but if he is a King George horse he has to win a Ladbrokes Trophy off this weight. If he’s not good enough, he’ll spend his time in handicaps, but I think he’ll get the trip and I’m happy with him. He’s in a good place.”

Two for Gold

Baileys other runner in the race is Two for Gold, currently around 12/1 with Ladbrokes to win the race. The trainer still seems unsure whether Two for Gold will run at Newbury, with Newcastle another option and the ground looks set to play a big part in his decision.

“A lot will depend on the ground and what the races look like. I looked first thing this morning and there were an awful lot of entries at Newcastle.”

“It’s a really difficult one and I’m not 100% sure Two For Gold is an out-and-out stayer. He’s won over three miles, but it was an easy three miles at Warwick, which would be a slightly different ball game to the Ladbrokes Trophy, although if it’s good ground at Newbury it would make the job slightly easier from the horse’s point of view.”

Update – Wednesday 25th November:

“David Bass, Ciaran Gethings, Chester Williams and Harry Beswick were in this morning.

“We worked a few and jumped a few too including Two For Gold who will join Vinndication in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury on Saturday… well that is the plan. Ciaran Gethings will ride him.”

Ladbrokes Trophy Betting Tips

The Ladbrokes Trophy Chase which is a Grade 3 handicap contested over 3m 1f. This is about as competitive as it gets in terms of a big Saturday live ITV handicap. I’m a big fan of about 6 horses that line up here today but I will side with Kildisart (9/1) who has been knocking on the door of landing one of these big handicaps for a while now. The Ben Pauling trained 8-year-old really impressed me on his seasonal reappearance in the bet365 hurdle when finishing third behind Roksana in what was likely to be a pipe opener for today’s big race.
It is worth noting Oli Bell featured on the onthenodpodcast a few weeks ago and tipped up Two for Gold a horse he owns a share in as his charity bet.
