Breeders Cup 2024 Tips for Saturday 2nd November
7:41 Del Mar
The first race we will look at is the Group 1 Turf Sprint over 5f.
I find it hard to get away from COGBURN (6/4), who has been a star sprinter this season on the US shores. Three impressive victories this season which the clock has backed up, he looks like he’ll be tough to beat here on home soil. Drawn in box 9, the main danger Bradsell is out wide in 12 so will do well to get in. You don’t want to be stuck out wide on the turf track over sprint distances. Believing has stall 1 and looks set for another hard luck story. I think Cogburn has the early speed to get a nice position and he can kick on as they turn into the straight and prove tough to stop.
8:21 Del Mar
The 8:21 race is the Group 1 Breeders Cup Distaff on the dirt over the 1m1f trip.
It is THORPEDO ANNA (8/13) here who looks banker material. In five runs this season, she has 4 Grade 1 victories and a close second behind the second favourite Fierceness. A race she arguably should have won. She breaks well and from stall 2, she’ll sit prominently before kicking on in the straight. Very tough to beat.
9:01 Del Mar
Next up we have the Group 1 Breeders Cup Turf over 1m4f, a race Europe have a strong record in.
I like JAYAREBE (9/2) NB in this for the Brian Meehan stable. A race that a 3 year-old often wins, he looks the best of the 3 year-old crop in this year’s renewal. He’s had a really strong consistent season which has included a win at Royal Ascot back in June and a Group 2 win last time out in France. He is improving all the time and this race should bring out the best in him. Proven over shorter, he’ll have no problem going the early pace and Sean Levey couldn’t ask for a better box than box 5. He has a decent turn of foot and has shown a willing attitude throughout the season. I’ll take the improving 3 year-old to beat the elders here.
9:41 Del Mar
The feature is up next, the Group 1 Breeders Cup Classic over 1m2f.
I like SIERRA LEONE (11/1) EW in this. They’re going to go fast and the faster they go, the better for the selection Sierra Leone. He’s a quirky sort that is full of talent but can often get in his own way. He went off 7/4 fav last time out when finishing a 2 length third behind Fierceness. Again, he was staying on there and was never nearer than he was at the line. I think the price discrepancy here between them two is too far apart. This race looks tailor made for Sierra Leone and jockey Flavian Prat is one for the big occasion.
10:25 Del Mar
The Group 1 races continue and next up is the Fillies & Mares Turf over 1m3f.
I like FULL COUNT FELICIA (12/1) EW here. Two impressive victories this season at Woodbine both from the front, I think she’ll be able to make the running again here. She has box 2 and there doesn’t appear to be much other pace on to my eye. If she gets loose on the front as expected, she could well prove tough to catch. I’d expect her to hold on to hit the frame at the very least.
11:05 Del Mar
The 11:05 race is the Breeders Cup Sprint, a Group 1 on the dirt over 6 furlongs.
The one I’ll chance is REMAKE (9/1) EW. He’ll relish 6f with a strong pace to aim at and he’ll definitely get there here. A winner of two of his three starts this season, I was really taken with his first victory in Saudi Arabia when gunning down the re-opposing Skelly. I can see this race setting up similarly to that day truth be told and a career-best performance may await Remake here.
11:45 Del Mar
The 11:45 is the Group 1 Breeders Cup Turf Mile.
A fantastic renewal of the race, I’ve landed on NOTABLE SPEECH (2/1) NAP for Godolphin. A meeting we know the yard excels at, I think they’ll get him right back to his best for this. He was an impressive winner of the 2000 Guineas where he shown a potent turn of foot to beat decent field there. He was also a very good winner of the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. He did disappoint at Royal Ascot in between where the slow tempo didn’t appear to suit and then last time out over in France, the soft ground was far from what he wants. He’s proven he can bounce back earlier in the season at the Sussex Stakes win came after that Royal Ascot disappointment. William Buick will love box 6 as the main danger Porta Fortuna will be on his outside as she breaks from 7. Ramateulle will need a lot of luck from stall 1. I think Notable Speech will be away and gone by the time she gets out.
