Cheltenham Gold Cup 2023 Runners: Galopin Des Champs the Favourite with 23 Horses Still Entered

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2023 runners

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the biggest race of the Cheltenham Festival and at the latest forefit stage, there were still 23 horses set to run in the race on Friday 17th March 2023.

Galopin Des Champs has been the long time favourite for the race and after his win at the Dublin Racing Festival, he is best odds 7/4 with SpreadEx or if you want a Gold Cup non runner no bet on Galopin Des Champs then you’re best off betting at Betfred, where he is 6/4 and money back if he doesn’t run.

At this stage, there are still 23 horses entered in the Cheltenham Gold Cup including last year’s winner A Plus Tard and the 2022 Grand National winner Noble Yeats, who some punters fancy to run well in the Gold Cup after his Aintree exploits last year.

  • A Plus Tard
  • Ahoy Senor
  • Angels Breath
  • Bravemansgame
  • Capodanno
  • Conflated
  • Coole Cody
  • Eldorado Allen
  • Envoi Allen
  • Franco De Port
  • Fury Road
  • Ga Law
  • Galopin Des Champs
  • Galvin
  • Hewick
  • Minella Indo
  • Noble Yeats
  • Protektorat
  • Royale Pagaille
  • Shishkin
  • Sounds Russian
  • Stattler
  • The Real Whacker

There are some really unlikely Gold Cup runners in that list including Shishkin who is expected to run in the Ryanair Chase and Envoi Allen who hasn’t been seen since a poor run in the King George on Boxing Day. He is likely to do battle with Shishkin in the Ryanair.

Galvin has had an injury but looks set to go to the Cross Country Chase to face off with Delta Work if he recovers in time and Coole Cody will be running in the Plate where he is tipped in our Staking A Claim series at a massive price.

Galopin Des Champs the Gold Cup Favourite

Willie Mullins has yet another potential superstar on his hands in the shape of Galopin Des Champs and he is set to go off a short-priced favourite for the Gold Cup this year.

He fell at the final fence in the Turners’ Novices Chase 12 months ago when he had the race won but that fall doesn’t seem to have affected him too much. He won the Boylesports Gold Cup at Fairyhouse and the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Fairyhouse before Christmas, then stepped up his form to win the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup in February, beating Stattler by 8 lengths.

The best odds for Galopin Des Champs to win the 2023 Gold Cup with a non-runner no bet offer are 6/4 with Betfred and this means if you bet on him but he doesn’t run in the race for whatever reason, you get your money back in cash.

Can A Plus Tard win a second Gold Cup?

A Plus Tard put in a fantastic display in this race 12 months ago to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Rachael Blackmore and Henry De Bromhead, however, he put in a really poor performance in his return to racing this year when pulling up in the Betfair Chase at Haydock back in November.

There were excuses for that run because it was just too bad to be true and he is set to take his chance in the Gold Cup again, where connections will be hoping he is back to somewhere near his brilliant best.

A Plus Tard’s odds to win the 2023 Gold Cup currently stand at 6/1 with William Hill, who are non runner no bet on the race so if he doesn’t run you get your money back. This looks a bit short given his run at Haydock but any bullish trainer quotes between now and the Festival would make backing him much more appealing.

Other Cheltenham Gold Cup Runners Could Include Protektorat, Conflated and Hewick

Protekorat will have his supporters in the Gold Cup this year and he looks like one of Paul Nicholl’s best of the week after finishing third in the 2022 Gold Cup. The odds for Protekorat to win the Gold Cup are 12/1 with a few firms but you’ll get 14/1 with the Betfred NRNB Gold Cup offer.

Conflated stole the headlines when winning the 2022 Irish Gold Cup at a big price and he was tipped up by some of the horse racing pundits that day. He went on to win the Savills Chase at Leopardstown as well but the Cheltenham hill could pose a problem to the horse and he fell in the Ryanair Chase 12 months ago.

Another interesting Gold Cup runner could be Hewick, who made all the headlines when going to America to win the American Grand National for his trainer and winning £150,000 in the process. He cost just €850 to buy for his Irish trainer John ‘Shark’ Hanlon and now they’re expected to take their chance in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
