Doncaster Tips for Day 2 of the St Leger Festival on Friday 13th September
1:50 Doncaster
The opener on Day 2 is the Mallard handicap – a race for the 3-year-olds and above over the extended 1m6f.
I like SHADOW DANCE (7/2) in this for Roger Varian. I think this progressive 4 year-old is capable of defying top weight in this 0-105 contest. He was last seen at the York Ebor meeting where he landed a competitive handicap over 1m4f. He wasn’t stopping and this extra 2f shouldn’t be a problem. He looks a solid contender in the opener that looks sure to be bang there.
2:25 Doncaster
Next up at 2:25 is the Flying Scotsman Stakes, a listed contest over 7f for the 2 year-olds.
I’ll chance MR CHAPLIN (12/1) EW here for the Beckett stable. With 5 runs this season, he brings more experience to this than most and is arguably more exposed as a result. However, he was an impressive winner on a decent-looking nursery at Glorious Goodwood before finishing 5th in a deep renewal of the Acomb Stakes last time out. I think this stiffer test over 7f will suit him well and this is a drop in class than what he was faced with last time out. There are plenty of horses that are open to significant amounts of improvement but at the prices, I’d be happy to go with one with proven form for this level in Mr Chaplin.
3:00 Doncaster
At 3:00 we have more 2 year-old action. This time it is the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes which is ran over 5f.
The one for me is AINT NOBODY (16/1) here. He was a good debut winner at Carlisle before going straight to Royak Ascot and he was a well-backed winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes. Things didn’t go to plan in the July Stakes last time out and I’m happy to draw a line through that effort. He’s been freshened up since as a result and I’m hopeful he can resume his improvement today and go close.
3:35 Doncaster
The 3:35 is the Doncaster Cup, a Group 2 for the stayers over 2m2f.
It is SWEET WILLIAM (2/1) NB for me here who appears to be the improving stayer this season. He finished a very good third in the Ascot Gold Cup behind the two best stayers in Kyprios and Trawlerman, both of whom will not be seen here. He then went on to chase home Kyprios at Goodwood and with him not here, he sets the standard. He’s a previous winner here at Doncaster and has proven form over this trip. The pace will be set by Coltrane and Gregory and hopefully that’ll set it up for him nicely here.
4:10 Doncaster
We finish with a fillies handicap at 4:10 over 1m4f.
I think CABRERA (2/1) NAP will take a lot of beating here. She certainly looks well handicapped on what we’ve seen so far and this progressive filly can take advantage of a mark of 87 here. She chased home another well-handicapped sort last time out and the pair pulled 11 lengths clear of the third that day. She’s a previous course and distance winner here at Doncaster and I’d be surprised if she doesn’t land this contest.
