Dublin Racing Festival Handicap Tips for a 92/1 Double on Saturday 4th February

The Dublin Racing Festival features some cracking Grade 1 action but we’re focusing on the two handicap races for our day 1 double at Leopardstown.

There are no less than four Grade 1 races and a the Grade 2 bumper rounds off the card, but with some short priced favourites in these races such as Lossiemouth and Galopin Des Champs, the two handicaps are the races where punters will be looking to take on the bookies and find some value.

3.40pm – Race And Stay At Leopardstown Handicap Hurdle

The first of two handicaps on Day One of the Dublin Racing Festival is a Grade B Handicap Hurdle over three miles. Maxxum is likely to be a well-backed favourite having absolutely bolted up over course and distance at the Christmas meeting by a whopping sixteen lengths. He has a huge 18lb rise to handle and with Cheltenham just around the corner, you wouldn’t think connections would want to see him go up much more. Blue Sari (10/1 with bet365) has some high-class form to his name and is rated 14lbs higher as a chaser.

He reappeared in behind Gaelic Warrior over the minimum trip, and it is interesting to see connections step him up three miles for the first time. Quite possibly his standout piece of hurdlers form came off 2lbs higher when falling at the final flight in the 2021 Coral Cup. He appeared to be travelling into the race sweetly that day and certainly shaped as though three miles could be within his reach.

With plenty of stamina in his pedigree on the Dams side, he’s certainly unexposed as a three-mile hurdler and on chase form would appear to be on a winnable mark. Like many handicap horses at this time of season, the one negative would be whether this is the target. Fingers crossed it is, and not just a prep for something a little further down the line.

 

4.10pm – Paddy Power Handicap Chase

Two-time defending champion A Wave Of The Sea (15/2 with bet365) heads the weights in a bid to win this race for a third straight year. Rated 150 after last season’s success in the race, he’s fallen 6lbs in the weights and will actually run off the exact same mark.

A P Kelly takes of 7lbs this time around and Shane Fitzgerald took off 5lbs last year. Having run at this meeting three times in the past, he has won on all three occasions, including a Grade 1 success in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle back in 2020.

He has been running over staying trips recently and recorded a good fourth behind The Big Dog in the Munster National. He’s shown enough to suggest the engine is still there and connections have surely laid him out for another crack at this. Final Orders is chasing an impressive five timer and could be hard to beat, but at 7/1, I think the play in the race is A Wave Of The Sea.
