1:50 Newbury
The first race on Lockinge Day is a listed contest for 3 year-olds known as the Carnarvon Stakes.
I expect NOBLE STYLE (4/5) to take an awful of beating in this contest. Despite a disappointing preparation, he ran very well in the 2000 Guineas finishing sixth not beaten that far given the mile on soft ground would have been a stretch. This is a significant drop in class and the return to 6f looks bound to suit a lot more than that Newmarket mile did. I think he’ll come on for that effort too and last years Gimcrack winner can get back in the winners enclosure here.
2:05 Newmarket
The first of three handicap races from Newmarket is a Class 4 handicap over the mile.
The one for me in this is ACOTANGO (7/2). A consistent 2 year-old who always looked like he was going to be better at 3 like most are from his stable. He shown he wintered well given he finished a really good second at Haydock on his seasonal reappearance. He wasn’t well fancied for that which suggests connections were expecting him to improve for that outing too That form is looking extremely strong now as well with several winners coming out of that contest already and this front-runner will be well suited by the Newmarket track on decent ground. Kingscote can set steady fractions and prove a tough nut to crack.
2:25 Newbury
The 2:25 race is the Al Rayyan Stakes, a Group 3 contest over 1m4f.
I’d be happy to chance GAASSEE (12/1) in this at a decent price. He was a really progressive handicapper last season and was at his best in the first half of the campaign which is encouraging for today’s seasonal reappearance. Therefore, I’d be confident he’ll be ready to go today on his first run since August. The Haggas stable have won this the last two years so know what it takes and this 5 year-old can continue improve this season. I think Yibir will improve for the run and he can often look tricky on his seasonal reappearance as he shown last season. Apart from Yibir, this doesn’t looks a strong Group 3 at all so I’d chance an improving handicapper from last year.
2:40 Newmarket
The second from Newmarket comes up at 2:40 and it is a Class 2 handicap over the 6f trip.
I like EMINENCY (11/4) NB here who was really unlucky last time out finishing a never nearer 4th at Kempton. Nothing went right there and the money that come for him before the off suggests connections must expect him to be a good deal better than this current mark of 84. Compensation awaits here in my opinion.
3:00 Newbury
It’s back to Newbury for the 3:00 race and it is a competitive renewal of the London Gold Cup handicap over 1m6f.
A race full of improvers, I’ve always like DESERT HERO )9/2) NAP since his fine debut victory at Haydock where he looks a really promising 2 year-old. He then went to Sandown and finish23 third in a decent renewal of the Group 3 Solario Stakes despite having no luck in running. That effort can be significantly marked up as a result. His final run of the season was at Redcar where he returned to winnings ways, albeit in a nothing race. I expect him to be a Group performer at some point this season and off a mark of 94 today, he ought to be going very close if he is indeed a Group horse. The Haggas stable have hit form now and this is a horse I like a lot.
3:15 Newmarket
The final race from HQ is at 3:15 and it is a Class 3 handicap over 7f.
I’d take a flyer at JUMBEAU (25/1) EW here who was a consistent filly throughout her 2 year-old campaign last season. She won on debut so I’m hoping the nice winter break will serve her well. She finished third in the Marygate on her next start before finishing a never nearer 5th at Royal Ascot in the Windsor Castle. She was a big price for both of those efforts and despite two poor runs since, she’s been freshened up and both jockey Hayley Turner and trainer Tom Clover are going well at the moment.
3:35 Newbury
The feature race ends proceedings and it is the Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes over the Newbury mile.
It’s JADOOMI (8/1) EW for me in this. He improved throughout last season winning at Group 2 level at both Goodwood and the Curragh. He then was stepped up to Group 1 company for the first time and he was far from disgraced on Champions Day finishing a good third in the Mile. He finished lame on the right leg that day so that effort can be marked up even further. The Crisford operation can’t do a lot wrong at present and Jadoomi may just get the run of things in front here. I think he’s underrated in the market and can go close.
