Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips from Newbury, Market Rasen and the Irish Oaks

Newbury racing tips

ITV are covering eight races from both the UK and Ireland on Saturday including the Irish Oaks where the O’Brien family have six of the eight runners, with Aidan’s Snowfall the short priced favourite.

Back on UK soil, Market Rasen have their summer jumps meeting and there is flat racing from Newbury, where the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes is the feature race on the card.

1:50 Newbury

The first race on ITV is the Stevenson Stakes, a listed contest ran over the 1m2f trip.

The one I like is DERAB (10/3). He was shown real progression and improving with every run before his disappointing display in the French Derby last time out. He is bred to be really good being a half brother to Enable and out of Sea The Stars. He has a nice weight advantage of his market principles given he’s a 3-year old and I’m happy to chance him continuing the earlier improvement back on English soil.

2.05 Market Rasen

The jumps is back! We have a competitive contest to get stuck into here, the summer handicap hurdle over 2m.

My selection is VALENTINO DANCER (9/1). This horse will absolutely relish the summer ground as she proved last time out when bolting up at Kelso. An 8lb raise for that victory is more than fair and the Fergal O’Brien team are recently operating at an impressive 30% strike rate so stable form is a huge plus. The strong gallop will suit her hold up style and I think she’ll run a big race.

2:25 Newbury

It’s back to Newbury next for a 2m handicap and it’s another wide open betting contest.

I’ll chance WITHHOLD EW (9/1) here. He is the proven class horse in the race on his day and it’s encouraging to see the Roger Charlton team have returned to strong form. Course and distance winner given he won this race in 2019 and Oisin Murphy takes the reigns having previously won on the horse. Good price.

2:40 Market Rasen

Next up at Market Rasen is the Summer Plate Handicap Chase over 2m5f.

My selection here is CAPTAIN TOM CAT NB (4/1). Another horse that will relish this summer ground and he’s looked really good since going over fences. He was a good hurdler last season but since going chasing he’s 3 from 3 and seems to be thriving over the bigger obstacles. I think he’ll get a few of his rivals in trouble and he has his perfect conditions here so there’s no reason to suggest he can’t run a big race. The stable are flying too.

3:00 Newbury

It’s Group 3 action next at Newbury and we have the Hackwood Stakes ran over 6f.

My selection in this is DILIGENT HARRY NAP (10/3). He’s been very progressive in his five career starts which includes a victory on AW Finals day. He then ran a good race last time out in a Group 3 finishing third when the stable were struggling for form. The Clive Cox team are now banging in the winners and I think this horse will improve for running on the turf for the first time, especially nice fast ground he can rattle off. He’s unexposed and he can take this.

3:10 Market Rasen

The 3:10 race is a handicap hurdle over 3m. Another nice wide-open betting heat for punters to try and solve.

My selection is TASTE THE FEAR (4/1) for the in-form duo of Dr Richard Newland and Sam Twiston-Davies. He won well two starts ago at Uttoxeter running on well to win by 6l before finishing a fine second on his handicap debut last time out at Worcester. I think he’s capable of running a big race of this mark of 123 and hopefully today is the day.

3:40 Newbury

The final race on ITV is the Super Spring Stakes. A 5f sprint race for 2-year olds.

The one I like here is SHOWTIME MAHOMES EW (28/1). A horse that will go unnoticed with many given the connections but he’s improved for each outing in his three career starts. Runner-up on his first two career starts, he stepped up and win last time out at Musselburgh where he picked up nicely to get up by 1l. I see no reason why he can’t continue to improve and he’ll enjoy this fast ground again here. In a wide open race, he’s one to back at a nice each way price.
