2:30 Royal Ascot
The opener on Day 2 is the Queen Mary Stakes, a Group 2 for the 2 year-old fillies over 5f.
My selection is MISS RASCAL (8/1) NB. She caught many an eye when a fast-finishing unlucky 6th at Newmarket on her debut before duly putting that right with a victory at Ascot making all and staying on strongly. That form has worked out well since with the second following up at listed level and I think Miss Rascal has the potential to be a real top 2 year-old sprinter this year. Tom Marquand is a positive jockey booking for the Paul and Oliver Cole team who are having a great season.
3:05 Royal Ascot
The 3:05 is the Queens Vase, a Group 2 race for the 3 year-olds over 1m6f.
It is BIRDMAN (3/1) for me here who comes into this unbeaten having won his two career starts. He won a maiden at Navan over 1m4f on debut in April showing us his staying qualities to fend his rivals off late on. He then followed up over 1m5f at Navan at the start of May keeping on well right through the line. He looks sure to relish this extra furlong and he looks fairly straightforward to me despite his inexperience. The Harrington stable are no stranger to a Royal Ascot winner and they have a live chance here.
3:45 Royal Ascot
Next up is the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes over the mile trip.
It is ROYAL DRESS (10/1) EW I’ve landed on in this. She was an impressive winner on her seasonal return at Goodwood back at the mile on her first start for current trainer James Tate. She should have backed that up with another victory at Epsom when we last seen her but she just couldn’t get out. I don’t think she’s finished improving and in an open race where the favourites have question marks to answer, she’s the one for me.
4:25 Royal Ascot
The feature on Day 2 comes up at 4:25. It is the Group 1 Prince Of Wales Stakes over 1m2f.
It’s INSPIRAL (5/2) NAP for me here. She’s a serious horse on a going day as proven by the six Group 1 victories to her name. The last of those was over the trip, albeit at the tight track of Santa Anita but she didn’t appear to be stopping and done well to get up given she had a wide passage throughout. I arguably think she could improve for this extra two furlongs and I have no doubt she’s the horse with the most ability in this contest. The main rival Auguste Rodin has to be respected of course but he was beaten fair and square last time out by White Birch and I’m happy to take him on at the price. Inspiral has to bounce back from a poor seasonal return in the Lockinge but she’s done it before and the Gosden’s horses have been improving for a run so I’m confident.
5:05 Royal Ascot
The 5:05 is the competitive Royal Hunt Cup, a handicap over the straight mile.
A tricky race, it’s PEROTTO (20/1) EW for me. He went off favourite for this race last year and things just didn’t quite go to plan as he faltered to 10th late on. He’s since won here over this course and distance on his last start and if he gets a more patient ride than last year, I’d be hopeful of a bold bid. The concern is this is his first start of the season but connections may well have targeted this and the Varian stable can certainly ready one after a break. The fast ground is right up his street and Tom Marquand takes the ride which is no bad thing.
5:40 Royal Ascot
It is a fillies handicap next, the Kensington Palace Stakes with 25 runners set to go to post for the mile contest.
Its ELIM (12/1) EW for me here. She was a progressive horse at 3 last season which included two victories to end her campaign at Newcastle and Musselburgh. She made her return this season at Redcar last month and looked badly in need of the run. She ran fresh and tired late on and was only beaten just over 2 lengths. With that form boosted since and Elim coming here off the same mark with that run under her belt, she’ll do for me.
6:15 Royal Ascot
The final race on Day 2 is the Windsor Castle Stakes, a listed race for the 2 year-olds over 5f.
A wide open race with plenty of unknowns, I’m happy to chance an outsider and the one I have landed on is VINGEGAARD (33/1) EW. Trained by Archie Watson, he’s no stranger to 2 year-old success and Vingegaard was a decent winner on debut at Chepstow over 5f. He looked green there and done well to win staying on strongly to win going away. He’ll have to step up significantly again of course but I think he’s capable of the necessary improvement to run a big race here.
