Satuday’s ITV Racing Tips from Newbury and Newmarket (15/05/21)

Newmarket racecourse

1:50 Newbury

The first race from Newbury is a 6f sprint of listed class known as the Carnarvon Stakes. Tactical bids to follow up his win last time out over 7f but I’d be concerned about him on this ground.

I’m happy to chance an outsider here and that outsider is MISHAL STAR EW (12/1). I don’t think he’s the most straightforward but I think he’s got a lot of speed and some talent to go with it. He won very well over this trip at Nottingham last September and he’s had excuses on his two runs since. Tom Marquand is as good as anyone at the moment and he has to be considered a strong jockey booking. In a race that can throw up the odd shock, he’ll do for me.

2:05 Newmarket

The 2:05 from Newmarket is another listed contest. This time over the 1m2f trip and John Leeper heads the market for the Ed Dunlop team. He is beautifully bred and has been a talking horse for the Derby. He’d have to win this you’d think to be considered a lovely Derby contender.

However, I prefer FANCY MAN NAP (5/2). He was arguably the horse to take out of the Chester Vase last week when finishing third behind Youth Spirit. Sean Levey went for home a little too early and maybe the 1m4f trip was 2f too far. I think Pat Donna who takes over today will keep hold of him a little longer here and the drop back to 1m2f seems perfect.

2:25 Newbury

The 2:25 from Newbury is a Group 3 over the 1m4f trip and we see the return of past St Leger winner Logician who bids to get his career back on track this season. He has had his issues but there’s no doubting he is a serious talent, the concern is whether said talent remains.

I do really like Al Aasy as a horse but there isn’t much value in him as a 5/6 shot. The one for me here is THUNDEROUS EW (15/2). He ran a decent race last time out when third behind Sir Ron Priestly at Newmarket on his first run over this trip. That was a steady pace so it wouldn’t have suited him being held up. He kept on well, doing his best work at the end of the race which suggests to me a more truly run race over this trip will suit him very well. He is a previous winner here at Newbury and I’m happy to play him each way on ground that will suit him better than the market principles.

2:40 Newmarket

The 2:40 race is the King Charles II Stakes, a listed race over the 7f trip.

I like BELLOSA (7/4) here. Her effort here over course and distance last time out was arguably one of the most impressive debuts we’ve seen all season. She was backed in from big morning prices that day like defeat was out of the question and won just as easy the market expected her too. You’d expect her to improve with that effort behind her and I think she’ll justify favouritism here back at Newmarket again before moving onto bigger summer targets.

3:00 Newbury

The 3:00 race from Newbury is the London Gold Cup Handicap ran over 1m2f. It is a wide open renewal full of unexposed sorts and I imagine this race will be worth following as the season goes on.

The one I like for today is KING FRANKEL (9/1). I think he might get his own way in front here and I don’t see much pace in the race. The soft ground won’t be an issue and I think a mark of 82 really underestimates this son of Frankel here.

3:15 Newmarket

The final race from Newmarket on ITV is a trappy 6f affair for punters to get stuck into.

I think compensation awaits here for JUMBY NB (3/1) who was very unlucky here at Newmarket last time out. The gaps just didn’t come and he stayed on strongly to finish a never nearer 3rd. He’s still unexposed as that was only his 4th start of his career and he can improve past these and win if he has a little more luck in running.

3:35 Newbury

The feature on the day ends proceedings on ITV and it is the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over the 1m trip. Palace Pier heads the market and rightfully so given he has the best form in the race and has won 6 from 7 career starts.

However, he is odds on here and I’m happy to look elsewhere from an each-way perspective. The one for me is TOP RANK EW (10/1). He also has an impressive win ratio winning six of his eight career starts. He is progressing well and I was really taken by his victory on his seasonal debut at Doncaster. I think he’s improving all the time and I think he’ll hit the frame here at least.
