A top hope for De Bromhead

Minella Indo Savills Chase 2020

The pick of the Irish challengers is Minella Indo, who was the runner up to Champ (who will miss this race after a setback) in the RSA at the last Cheltenham Festival.

The seven-year-old picked up Grade Two honours last time out in the BetVictor Make Your Best Bet Chase at Navan.

His jumping was sublime and trainer Henry De Bromhead believes that the horse looks much sharper this season.

In the RSA in March, Minella Indo ran out of steam as he toiled for the lead with Allaho, before Champ came late to cross the line first.

The yard will hope the horse has improved this season and eradicated any weakness that could lead to Minella Indo’s tank emptying again.

Jockey Rachael Blackmore will be looking to score for the sixth time onboard this natural stayer who also won the Albert Bartlett at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival.

Champ gets up to land a thrilling RSA Chase earlier this year.

Delta Work to defend his crown?

Delta Work was fantastic last season, the only disappointment was that he couldn’t back up his dual Grade One-winning form with a better run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Gordon Elliott’s seven-year-old ground out two determined victories in the Savill’s Chase and then the Paddypower Irish Gold Cup in February.

This season, Elliott has chosen to take the same route as he did last season, as the horse made its seasonal reappearance in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal at the end of October.

Delta Work came fifth, six lengths behind The Storyteller. Elliott was pleased with the run and predicts that the horse will improve as the season goes on, like last season.

The last horse to defend their Savill’s Chase crown was Beef Or Salmon in 2005, and Delta Work’s knowledge and form at Leopardstown is a big factor for this horse.

Delta Work got up on the line to win this race 12 months ago.

Kemboy looking to rediscover form

Kemboy had a fine 2018/2019 season when winning three Grade One’s, including the Savill’s Chase.

The horse disappointingly unseated David Mullins at the first fence in the 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup, but still went on to win at Aintree and Punchestown.

Willie Mullins admitted that Kemboy was disappointing last season and the eight-year-old will need dry ground to rediscover his form.

Kemboy has beaten fantastic horses before including Clan Des Obeaux and Al Boum Photo and Mullins will be hoping we are yet to see the best of him.

The horse has won seven out of 15 chases under rules which is very impressive, Kemboy will always have the ability to perform in big races.

He is an attractive price at 6/1 for what the horse has previously achieved, but the ground can’t be too soft.

Kemboy hacked up in the Betway Bowl at Aintree in 2019.

The best of the rest

When Presenting Percy moved over to Elliott’s yard from Pat Kelly in October, racing fans were shaking with anticipation for the horse to reappear on the course.

After a decent display in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal, he won his first race since January 2019 in the boomerang.ie Chase at Thurles in November.

Although the horse is slightly older than his main rivals for the Savill’s Chase, we are yet to see what Elliott can bring out of the former RSA Champion.

It was this performance in the RSA at the Cheltenham Festival in 2018 that fans of Presenting Percy will hope can be reproduced this season.

The Storyteller is also another eye-catching contender from the Elliott yard, who impressively won the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal in October.

This is a versatile horse that has won over three miles in the hurdle and chase spheres and his last performance was a big step in the right direction, especially when we consider the horses that were beaten.

The Storyteller has run six times since the close second-place finish in the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

This is an approach not taken before with this horse, it looks to have worked so far and the plan could prove to be even more successful in the Savill’s Chase.
