Shergar Cup Tips 2022 – Preview and Betting Tip for Every Live ITV Race on Saturday
Shergar Cup Day takes centre stage at Ascot on Saturday but there are also races from the Curragh, Haydock and Newmarket on a busy day of live racing. As ever, Henry has been through all the races and given his tip for each.
This weekend’s ITV Racing starts at 1.35pm from Ascot and runs all the way through to 5.05pm.

The first race of 11 on ITV is a 7f contest where 8 runners are set to go to post.
The one for me here is DIVINE MAGIC (8/1) EW. A really consistent sort who is best suited to a still 7f examination like this here at Ascot. She was a good winner two starts back at Leicester before only going down by a neck to a solid yardstick in Dubai Love last time out at Newmarket. I can see her going close under optimum conditions and she looks the value in here to me.
The Shergar Cup Dash is next up over the minimum 5 furlongs.
The one for me here is MANACCAN (5/1). The progressive 3 year-old up against the exposed elders is the way to go for me here. The favourite has to be vulnerable at the prices and the selection is improving with every start. He ran well at Chester last time out finishing a good second staying on well. King Of Stars will set a decent pace for him to aim at and Hayley Turner is a positive jockey booking at this meeting.
The first of two races from Haydock is the London Mile.
Not the strongest of selections but I’ll go with LA TRINADAD here. He operates very well here at York and continues to come down in the weights. Last time out here at York wasn’t a bad effort and dropped a further 1lb to a mark of 89, he can go close in this.
The 2:45 race is the Shergar Cup Stayers over the 2m distance.
The one for me is THRONE HALL (13/2) EW. He’s been running really consistently of late and has been unlucky not to get his head in front. He’s being running over slightly shorter distances but I do think this step up to 2m could definitely suit. He should get his own way out in front if the usual tactics are implied and trainer Archie Watson has his horse in fine fettle over the last few weeks.
The 3:00 race is a Group 3 contest known as the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes over the 1m3f distance.
I was very impressed with GROCER JACK (6/4) NB when he won the column last time out. He went out fast but still stayed on powerfully pulling clear from the opposition. He’s improving with every run for the Haggas yard and he can continue on the upward curve and take this Group 3 race.
Next up we’re back to Ascot for the Shergar Cup Challenge. This race is ran over 1m4f.
I think CHARGING THUNDER (9/2) can complete the hat-trick. He has won his last two starts over slightly longer trips but he should get a good pace to aim at in this and he’ll be staying on better than most given he’s obviously proven over further. If there is no pace, he likes to lead so he can set the strong pace and prove tough to pass. He’s tactically versatile and he’s on the upgrade.
The 3:40 races comes from HQ and it is the Sweet Solera Stakes, a Group 3 for the fillies over 7f.
I’ll go with ALSEYOOB (13/2) here. Arguably open to the most improvement as she’s only had one career start to date. That was a decent debut win here at Newmarket where she made all. She showed a decent turn of foot to pull away that day and the third has won since to give the form a boost.
The 3:55 race is the Shergar Cup Mile.
I like MONTASSIB (9/4) NAP here. He’s the real improver in this field and after winning his first two starts this season, he’s then went close in two really competitive handicaps at Royal Ascot and then at Newmarket last time out. This is a weaker race and he can improve past this lot.
The feature of the day is definitely the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes over 6f and it’s a fascinating renewal.
A great race where you can make a case for many but PERSIAN FORCE (5/1) is the value for me in here. A winner of his first two career starts in taken fashion, he went to Royal Ascot as favourite and ran well finishing second behind Bradsell. I don’t think there was many excuses there but there can’t be much between them. However, Persian Force is a much bigger price and has came out and won again since. A great race.
The 4:30 race is another race over 1m4f, this one is a handicap known as the Shergar Cup Classic.
I’ve landed on SHARP COMBO (16/1) EW here. Trainer Mark Johnston has a good record in this contest and I can see both running well. However, Sharp Combo sneaks in and gets plenty of weight off his rivals. He ran his best race for a while last time out at Goodwood and hopefully he can kick on again here. His stablemate is likely to go forward and should set a decent pace for the selection to try and run down.
The finale comes up at 5:05 and it is the Shergar Cup sprint over 6f.
It’s ADMIRAL D (7/2) for me here. I think this 6f at Ascot will suit well and he was very eye-catching last time out finishing second behind Lethal Levi at Newmarket. This stiff finish will suit and I think he’s a certainty to go very close in this weaker race.
