2023 Cross Country Chase & Brown Advisory Chase Tips – Cheltenham 2023 Ante-post

Cheltenham Festival 2021

The Dublin Racing Festival is this weekend so we are really ramping up the Grade 1 action as we head towards the 2023 Cheltenham Festival and our Staking A Claim tips this week cover off two more races from Prestbury Park.

You can see all the existing selections in the table at the end of this article and there are also links to the write-ups for each week. That’s 28 ante-post tips already in the can for the 2023 Festival and although some have already fallen away, we hope to go into March with some nice ante-post prices and live chances.

All the selections will be recorded as a 1pt win or 0.5pts each-way and we haven’t restricted the tips to any particular bet so you can expect to see singles, doubles and even the odd treble for the tips.

You can also follow both Ciaran (@murphfinbarrs) and OB (@OB_14) on Twitter where they will be outlining all of their ante-post bets and thoughts ahead of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.

Ciaran’s Week 15 Tip

  • Galvin (Cross Country Chase)
  • Current Odds – 6/1 with Coral

This week, we take a punt at the Cross Country chase. The trial at Cheltenham last week is a nice opportunity to get a look at some of the intended runners, although given that it is a Handicap, the form can pretty much be thrown out the window, except to say that Delta Work ran well in 3rd.

As I said, given that the corresponding race at the festival is off-level weights, then you really have to be looking at the classier animals and Delta Work, as defending Champion, is the rightful favourite. However, I don’t believe he will be the highest-rated horse in the field. That horse will be GALVIN. A festival winner in the not quite 4 miler in 2021, Galvin beat subsequent Gold Cup Winner A Plus Tard in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown and went off 10/3 second favourite for the showpiece event in March. A respectable 4th there has admittedly being followed up by some disappointing efforts but I think that has opened the door to drop in class to this race a couple of years earlier than maybe expected.

The Aintree Grand National is his ultimate aim, but Josh Stacey on Lets talk Racing is usually good with info from the Elliot yard and said this week that he would run here en route. Gordon uses this race as a prep for the Nash so that makes sense and while this will be Delta Works big day and Galvin’s first go at the fences, that didn’t hurt Delta Work himself last year against Tiger Roll. He is officially rated 10 lbs higher than delta so can afford to be slightly below his best and at 6/1 I’m willing to take a chance that he will be good enough in what will likely be a 2 horse race.

OB’s Week 15 Tip

  • Gerri Colombe (Brown Advisory Chase)
  • Current Odds – 8/ 1 with Coral

Selection 15 sees me go back to graded company and across the Irish sea again with this week’s pick coming from the Gordon Elliott yard. I’ve been mulling over putting this horse up for a while but just resisted due to the risk of going to another race. The horse being declared this weekend tells us a lot of where he is going to be aimed at and I’m getting on now before his price plummets.

Gerri Colombe (8/1) is the pick for the 3m Brown Advisory Chase. I’ve wanted to put another selection in this race due to my previous pick being the unfortunate and ill-fated Three Stripe Life. Gerri Colombe has this and the National Hunt Chase as entries at the festival but it’s looking very unlikely that he runs in the latter as he probably won’t be qualified. His declaration at Sandown on Saturday over 2m4 is likely to be his last race before Cheltenham so therefore cannot run in the NHC meaning his festival target should be this.

Unbeaten in all 6 starts under rules (2 flat, 2 hurdles and 2 chases), I believe we are nowhere near seeing Gerri Colombe’s best on a racecourse yet. Gordon has been steady with him and didn’t run him in any of the spring festivals last season. His runs have only come between November-February so running in the spring is an unknown but it’s an unknown that doesn’t worry me. There’s often talk that the horse needs soft/heavy but Gordon has denied that and said even though he is better on ground that has significant give in it, he believes he can handle the better ground too.

You could argue that the majority of horses he has beaten in his career aren’t G1 or top horses but I think that’s just Gordon giving him a soft approach into the game. He battled well at Limerick over Xmas and got the better of Adamantly Chosen & Kilcruit and im certain theres a lot more to come when stepped up in trip.

I think his price will shorten before Saturday’s run and then shorten again after the race (I think he wins) so I would advise you to take the 8/1 now. The Brown Advisory lacks a bit of class in my opinion and I think my selection is going to lay the law down and put himself at the time of the market come Saturday afternoon.
