Sunday Racing Tips: Best Bets for Aintree & Wincanton on Sunday
The Old Roan Chase (3:00) is the most valuable race of the day at Aintree on Sunday, but the supporting card is intriguing enough and there are a couple of decent handicaps at Wincanton to get our teeth into.
We’ve run a rule over the likely contenders and highlighted our best bets at both meetings.

Aintree: 3:00 Jewson Monet’s Garden Old Roan Limited Handicap Chase 2m4f
Itchy Feet won this race last year after winning at Kelso on his reappearance three weeks earlier and is following the same route this time around. However, Gold Des Bois, who finished second at Kelso from 8lb out of the handicap, was readily swept aside off his correct mark at Carlisle next time, which casts some doubt out the form. Topweight Allmankind – who’s a Grade 1 winner over hurdles and fences – returned to action, following wind surgery, with a promising effort over the smaller obstacles at Chepstow last month and looks the one to be on.
Selection: Allmankind (7/2 with William Hill)
Aintree: 4:10 Jewson Wallasey Handicap Hurdle 2m4f
Just one of these has seen a racecourse in the last five months or so, which makes life ‘interesting’ for punters. The going at Aintree may be a little faster than ideal for Pounding Poet, but he seemingly goes well fresh and, with little rain forecast for Sunday morning, he may be capable of completing a hat-trick. Tom Scudamore, who replaces regular partner Robbie Dunne, has a 22% strike rate for the yard in recent seasons.
Selection: Pounding Poet (11/4 with William Hill)
Wincanton: 2:45 Fitzdares Racing Welfare Handicap Chase 3m2½f
Railway Muice takes another step up in class, and distance, as he attempts to make it 4-4 since joining Cambridgeshire trainer Sarah Humphrey in late September. The Yeats gelding has already improved by 20lb, according to official handicap ratings and, while he faces his stiffest task to date, it’s impossible to predict where his improvement may end. In receipt of 14lb and upwards from his rivals and with Nick Scholfield riding at his minimum weight of 10st 0lb, he looks worth chancing.
Selection: Railway Muice (5/1 with William Hill)
Wincanton: 3:20 Fitzdares Racing Welfare Handicap Hurdle 2m5½f
The hat-trick-seeking Translink is only 4lb higher in the weights than when winning a similar race at Worcester last month and, with the extra furlong and a half likely to play to his strengths, can make it three wins from four starts since undergoing a wind operation in the summer. The Rail Link gelding remains open to further improvement after just six starts over hurdles, so has plenty going for him.
Selection: Translink (3/1 with William Hill)
