York Ebor Festival Day 1 Tips for the 5 ITV Live Races
The 2022 York Ebor Festival kicks off on Wednesday 17th August and we’ve got five races to cover which are live on ITV.
Henry has been through each race live on ITV Racing and picked his bet bet from each. The action gets underway at 1.50pm.

A very competitive 22 runner handicap starts the Ebor meeting and if you have the winner of this, it could pay for the week.
I like DUSKY LORD (17/2) EW here. I think this unique 5 and a half furlongs will be perfect for him. He looks just a little short of speed for the fast 5f races but 6f can stretch him so this looks spot on. He ran a cracker at Goodwood staying on well to just get touched off in second behind Lord Riddisford. He holds a few of these on that form and I’m confident the first-time blinkers can squeeze out further improvement here. Stall 19 looks fine as there is plenty of pace around him.
The first piece of Group action comes up at 2:25 with a decent renewal of the Group 3 Acomb Stakes for the 2 year-olds over 7f.
I like CHALDEAN (7/1) EW here. The son of Frankel has an excellent pedigree and like many of the Andrew Balding 2 year-olds, he took a chunky step forward from his debut effort to win a decent Novice Stakes contest last time out at Newbury. I think he can come forward again and Ryan Moore is a positive jockey booking.
The 3:00 race is the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes over 1m4f.
The one for me is AIKHAL (7/2) NAP for the Aiden O’Brien team. He made his seasonal return at Ascot in the St James Palace Stakes after a long break and the market vibes told us he was going to need the run and evidently need a step up in trip. He then stepped up to 1m2f for his next start at the Curragh and bolted up staying on right through the line. He’s bred to continue improving the further up in trip he goes and he steps up a further 2f again here. He’s coming to the boil at the right time and I think he’s the bet of the day.
The feature comes up at 3:35 and it is the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes over 1m2f where we will see Baaeed step up from the mile trip for the first time.
I’m happy to play MISHRIFF (4/1) EW here. He is the toughest rival Baaeed has ever faced and this was the scene of Mishriff’s career best performance. He is comfortably the second best horse in this race for me and you’re getting your money back if he finishes second to the favourite. I think if he gets away on terms this time, he will definitely give Baaeed a race and expose any stamina concerns late on.
The final race on ITV on Day 1 is another decent handicap, this time it’s the turn over the stayers over the 2m trip.
I like FRANKENSTELLA (10/1) EW here for the John Quinn stable. She made a very encouraging return to action this season here at York back in May finishing a good third in a decent contest, the favourite Master Milliner was second. She has always improved for her first run of the season so I think that will have brought her on nicely. I’m hoping the break between then and now has been to target this race as it looks sure to suit her if the rains stays away. She is a course and distance winner here at York and she has a lovely racing weight for this of 8’4. I’m finding it hard to see her out the frame at a nice each-way price.
