Having earned promotion from the Championship last season, Newcastle have aimed to strengthen their squad over summer by bringing the likes of Jacob Murphy from Norwich and Mikel Merino from Borussia Dortmund. The latter could turn out to be a particularly shrewd bit of business. The Magpies have also added defensive pair Florian Lejeune and Javier Manquillo from Spanish sides Eibar and Atletico Madrid respectively.
In contrast, it’s been a very quiet summer for Tottenham as far as the transfer market goes. They’re yet to make any notable signings. Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that his squad can take advantage of already having played together all of last season.
Plenty has been made about Tottenham’s lack of signings this summer but we shouldn’t forget that this is more or less still the team that finished second last year. Sunday’s visitors have a strong side, one that boasts both creativity and last seasons’ top-scorer in Harry Kane. Newcastle did of course thrash Spurs 5-1 when these two last met, back in May 2016, but with this match coming under different circumstances, it’s hard to see a repeat of that. However, the hosts shouldn’t be discounted and can certainly get competitive. The sale of Kyle Walker doesn’t look so bad when you consider that Kieran Trippier is there to slot in; however, that particularly replacement is out injured, as is influential winger/forward Son Heung-min. There are also fitness doubts over defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama.
Historically, this fixture has tended to throw up high-scoring encounters with nine of the last ten meetings containing at least three match goals. Both teams have also scored in nine of those. With this in mind, ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’, at odds of 5/4 with Coral, gets the vote here as our Newcastle v Tottenham prediction. With attacking players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in their ranks, Spurs undoubtedly have the quality to do some damage here but, with a few defensive absentees, Newcastle can also make their presence felt going forward.
