AC Milan vs SPAL Preview – 31/10/2019 Serie A

After assembling a decent-looking squad and appointing Marco Giampolo in the summer, AC Milan fans could have been forgiven for dreaming big and targetting the European spots. However, it’s been quite the opposite with the Rossoneri sitting twelfth and onto their second manager of the season already. Stefano Pioli wasn’t able to guide his side to a victory at the weekend with losing 2-1 at Stadio Olimpico. That followed on from an underwhelming 2-2 draw against Lecce seven days earlier.

AC Milan have shown plenty of vulnerabilities from set-pieces and they are worryingly weak at the back. At the other end of the field, they do tend to find the back of the net, but aren’t creating enough chances. Constant rotation isn’t helping either and there are likely to be plenty of changes for this midweek fixture. Krzysztof Piatek is one man who is likely to return whilst Ismael Bennacer is surely also in contention.

SPAL picked up a decent 1-1 draw with Napoli at the weekend and they will be largely relying on their home form this season. They are embroiled in a relegation battle and it’s their away form which appears to be dragging them down. They are yet to score an away goal which is surprising considering that they found the net in 14/19 matches on their travels last season.

Having said that, they do offer a threat from set-pieces, and that could come in handy here. Andrea Petagna is one man who could find the back of the net and get the ball rolling in this one. SPAL have lost each of their last two trips here (2-0 and 2-1).

SPAL to get their First Away Goal of the Campaign?

SPAL’s form on the road has been very poor so far. They have been second best against Bologna, Juventus and Sassuolo although they put in a much-improved display against Cagliari two weeks ago. They had the best of the play in that contest, had five shots on target and missed a big chance to get a foothold in the game.

If they play in a similar fashion this time around, they stand a good chance of getting on the scoresheet and Both Teams to Score? Yes at 19/20 with Coral looks extremely tempting.

Calhanoglu a Rare Bright Spot

The majority of AC Milan players have underperformed this season and very few of them can come out of their recent appearances with much credit. However, Hakan Calhanoglu has at least looked like he cares and his performances at the San Siro have been above average.

In 309 minutes of football here, he’s scored twice and claimed one assist. He also averages three shots per game at home and will surely get a few opportunities in this one.

The Turk is 11/5 with Betfair to score at any point in this game
