Arsenal v Middlesbrough Preview
Middlesbrough are in great form having notched six wins from six and sit proudly atop the Championship table following their 2-1 victory over bottom side Blackpool. With just two defeats from their past 25 Championship games, Man City’s slayers in the fourth round will not be easy prey for Arsenal in the fifth. Boro’s fans must already be dreaming of a return to the Premier League with memories of those heady mid-nineties days of Emerson, Ravanelli and Juninho. But can they repeat their achievement of 1997 and make it to the FA Cup final?
Arsenal are in similarly good form, with six wins from seven in all competitions. They were however defeated in the North London Derby last weekend but bounced back with a win over Leicester midweek. Yet, the win over Leicester will have raised a few concerns from the manager with Arsenal very nearly letting a two-goal lead slip in the final minutes but for Colombian keeper David Ospina. The 2-1 win was enough to push them up to fourth place in the table, for 24 hours at least.
The return of Mesut Özil has significantly boosted Arsenal’s form of late. He has been a pivotal figure in many of the Gunners’ recent wins and looks to be back to the form he showed when he first signed for the Gunners. However, fresh injury concerns for Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez mean that Arsenal will not be able to field a full strength starting 11 against Middlesbrough. Nonetheless, with Arsenal’s strength in depth, they would surely expect to progress to the next round of the FA Cup against lower league opposition, however good Boro’s form.
Boro’s consistency cannot be questioned this season; to be top of the Championship at this stage in the season takes a good squad and a winning mentality. Against better opposition, we can only judge Boro on their victory at The Etihad. Quite simply, Middlesbrough outplayed City, deservedly progressing to the fifth round. They defended resolutely and scored two very classy goals. Arsene Wenger will surely have made his players watch the DVD of this game and will be warning his players against complacency. As, quite frankly, if they go into the game thinking it’ll be a walkover, they will be knocked out.
As far as FA Cup ties go, this is one of the hardest ones to offer football betting tips on. To defeat the Premier League Champions at their home is no mean feat. Furthermore, Wenger has a track history of fielding weaker sides in cup competitions, just as City did in the fourth round. However, the Arsenal manager is no mug. He has already shown this in the Gunner’s victory over Man City in the Premier League, changing his tactics to contain and hit Man City on the break. It worked perfectly. He has learnt from the mistakes of last season where they were humiliated and trounced against some of the top sides.
With Middlesbrough’s form being so good, I am predicting them to really go for it in this match. As they showed in the previous round, they are not overawed by the occasion. They also have enough about them to cause Arsenal trouble in defence. Therefore my first Arsenal v Middlesbrough betting tip is for both teams to score.
The best odds for both teams to score can be found with Ladbrokes at 10/11.
However, I feel that Arsenal have enough character about them to see the match through and progress to the Quarter-finals. My second betting tip is for Arsenal to win and both teams to score.
The odds for Arsenal to beat Middlesbrough and both teams to score are 11/5 with William Hill.
As I expect this to be enthralling cup-tie full of passion, I would be surprised if we are not graced with a bundle of goals. Arsenal’s fourth round tie against Brighton finished 3-2 and I expect a similar kind of score in this match. Arsenal have a tendency to concede goals when they take their foot off the gas. Therefore my third and final football betting tip is for the match to have over 3.5 goals. The best odds can be found with BetVictor at 15/8.
