Barcelona v Man City Betting Preview:
After being comprehensively outplayed at The Etihad a couple of weeks ago, Manchester City are fortunate to still have a chance – albeit a slight one – of Champions League progression. Lionel Messi's last gasp penalty miss cost the Catalan side a deserved two goal cushion heading into the second leg, and handed the English champions some much needed momentum ahead of the return clash.
However, this momentum was very much short-lived. City went on lose to Liverpool in the league later that week in another match they could have lost by a more significant margin. An extremely unremarkable home win against bottom club Leicester followed this, before most recently, losing on their travels to Burnley at the weekend. During this time, City have only managed four goals. They will need at least half as many as that on Wednesday if they are to have any chance of turning the tie on it's head.
Since beating Manuel Pellegrini's men, Barcelona have gone on to win their last four domestic games scoring 14 times in the process. Perhaps most worrying for Manchester City, though, is the fact Lionel Messi has shaken off his spot-kick faux pas and scored six of those goals.
Nevertheless, one chink of light for City could be that Barcelona have conceded in four of their last five matches and also leaked six goals during the group stage. It's very much a clutching at straws scenario for The Citizens, but their hosts have been beaten 1-0 by the likes of Malaga, Celta Vigo and Real Sociadad this season. If they can be in a similar position heading into the last quarter of the match, there will be an opportunity to achieve the most unlikely of victories.
As much as I would love to see an English team in the latter stages of the competition, based on current form, I don't give City a prayer in my Barcelona v Man City predictions tonight. Considering that they struggled to create anything against Burnley at the weekend, it doesn't bode well for any kind of fightback against Barcelona. Admittedly, odds of 4/9 aren't particularly appealing, however, Barcelona to win and BTTS comes in at 31/20 with Coral. This seems a solid place to start bearing in mind that outcome has happened in four of the home side's last five matches.
Bet on both teams to score and Barcelona to win at odds of 31/20 with Coral.
Heading over to the goalscoring market, and based on such outstanding statistics, Lionel Messi cannot be ignored. As previously mentioned, the Argentine has six goals in his last four matches which has taken his season's tally to 43. Needless to say, this is better than a goal a game. Therefore, back Messi to score first with Betfred at 3/1 under their DD/HH promotion. There could be a real bookie bashing on the cards if he nets early in the game.
Bet on Lionel Messi to score first at 3/1 with Betfred, if he scores 2 you’ll get double odds, treble odds for a hat-trick.
Finally, for a little bit of a longshot, and based on the nature of the match, we really could be set for any kind of scoreline. Manchester City need at least two goals to stand a chance of qualification but have only kept one clean sheet in 14 Champions League matches, this has the potential to be a very high scoring encounter.
BTTS odds are unsurprisingly low at 4/7, but BTTS in both halves in on offer at 11/1 with Skybet and definitely worth a punt.
