Barnsley vs Carlisle Preview

Daniel Stendel has a superb record since arriving at Oakwell. The German boss is unbeaten in all 28 matches at this stadium, and is yet to be defeated in front of his own fans. True, the Tykes were less than impressive in their South Yorkshire derby at the weekend, but back at home, they will be expected to cruise through to the next round against League Two opposition. A ‘lack of experience’ was attributed to Barnsley’s underwhelming performance at Hillsborough, and there is understandably concern over the extent of Alex Mowatt’s injury. The midfielder is highly likely to miss out here. Barnsley have a squad of 29, so there is plenty of scope for reshuffle here. They added a couple of players of deadline day with Patrick Schmidt likely to feature whilst former Leeds man Clark Oduor also set to be handed a start. Callum Styles, Dani Pinillos and Jordan Williams are other players who could get some valuable game-time in this cup tie. Last season, Barnsley crashed out to Blackpool at this stage of the EFL Cup in one of Stendel’s first matches in charge. The club haven’t made it beyond the second round of this competition since 2009.

Carlisle were beaten at the weekend, with Steven Pressley’s side comprehensively outplayed at the County Ground. The 3-2 scoreline probably flattered the Cumbrians who saw former loan star Jerry Yates net against them. They did show fight, and the fact that they didn’t collapse is a good sign for the remainder of the campaign. Pressley admitted that there is no pressure on his side going into this tie, but he is sending an XI out to win. The League Two outfit have taken three points from their first two games, although conceding three goals in those two matches is a slight concern. Going into the season, some fans were concerned about their side’s creativity and firepower, but Nathan Thomas has begun well, whilst Harry McKirdy and Olufela Olomola are both off the mark for the campaign. The Cumbrians don’t have an especially impressive record in this competition either with just two 90 minute victories since 2012.

Barnsley vs Carlisle Betting Tips

Barnsley are going to start this game at odds of 4/7, and that looks reasonable for the Championship side. However if you’re looking for added value, it’s 17/20 for Barnsley Win and Over 1.5 Goals. The Tykes have a number of powerful players, whilst Carlisle’s back-line looks far from water-tight. The visitors also pose a danger in the final third, so Stendel will want to see his side close out this game, and not settle for a single goal success.

We don’t know what kind of XI Stendel will name for this game, although Jacob Brown could get some minutes here. He missed most of pre-season through injury, and will be desperate to get back in the saddle. He ended last season in superb form at League One level, and this could be the ideal game for him to make his comeback. If Brown plays, he could get onto the score-sheet, and at 21/10 with Bet365, he could be worth taking a chance on.
