Cheltenham vs Scunthorpe Preview

Cheltenham can have very few complaints about their 1-0 defeat in East London last weekend. The Robins were second best against an Orient side who were determined to pay tribute to the late Justin Edinburgh. Michael Duff’s side will be without Luke Varney and Rohan Ince who were both dismissed in that game, and they will need to be far more creative this afternoon. Their home record was very impressive last season with Tranmere the only side to beat them here in 2019. They lost just six times overall at Whaddon Road, and they won’t make it easy for Scunny. They may be ten games unbeaten in front of their own fans, yet they have a poor record against Scunny, and haven’t beaten them in any of their eight previous meetings. They will look to keep things tight once again and potentially capitalise on an opposition who are still adapting to life under their new gaffer.

Scunthorpe were hoping to make a quick start to life in the fourth tier, but they were defeated by a very well-organised Walsall outfit. Fans reported a lack of creativity was holding them back, although Adam Hammill is always a threat, and is potentially too good for this level. They will be hoping that the rot hasn’t set in, and that Paul Hurst can find a way of shifting the losing mentality which seems to have dominated over the last six months. They haven’t won a game since March 12th, and have now lost nine of their last eleven games. It hasn’t been much fun being an Iron fan in recent months, and those long suffering travelling fans will be hoping that their side can give them something to celebrate on their long trip back to Lincolnshire.

Cheltenham vs Scunthorpe Betting Tips

Scunthorpe are the favourites for this clash, but it’s always ill-advised to write off Cheltenham at home. They’ve been superb on their own patch in 2019, and although they are missing key figures here, they are going to be hard to beat. Scunny don’t look like the finished product yet, and it may take a few weeks for Paul Hurst to get his ideas across. He doesn’t always get off to a quick start, and many of Hurst’s previous successes have arrived when he’s been given time. The draw seems like the obvious way to go here, and at 12/5, it provides some value.

Although the Robins were excellent at home last season, they did only manage six clean sheets, and they conceded in five of their last six games here. Scunny didn’t create an awful lot last week, but they should be better this time around, and they do have individual quality within their squad. Both Teams to Score? Yes is 8/11, and looks a decent pick.
